like his ability to conjure flames. Instead of flames, a dark, smoke-like power was manifested. It could be used for defensive purposes or an attack. Jason knew that everyone had a weakness at this point though. While this dark shield went up, Jason jumped into the air and went in for an attack. The darkness whipped out to grab Jason, but he reacted too quickly. He spun around it and met Sollamance’s face with his foot. The darkness dissolved and Sollamance shot to the ground. He wasn’t down for long though. When he reappeared out of the dust, he held his Quix blade in his hands. That was the name Sollamance had used to describe it to Jason.
Jason had no weapon that could match up to the blade, but he did have ways around it. Jason lunged for an attack and waited for Sollamance to react. He made a slash at Jason’s chest, but Jason was ready for it. He created a flame barrier in his hands to catch the sword. Jason gritted his teeth and struggled to hold the sword back. Sollamance, too, was beginning to struggle to make the attack. Jason increased his flames heat and the force it exerted. He pushed the sword away from his chest and swung his foot into Sollamance’s gut. Sollamance coughed out in pain, but also had a counter attack. The darkness gripped his leg tight, trapping Jason. Sollamance looked into Jason’s eyes and smirked. Jason reached up at his throat and gripped tightly. He was ready to heat up his hand when he realized that he couldn’t kill Sollamance. He needed him to help him release his power. Jason loosed his grip and Sollamance used it as a chance to attack. He drove his elbow into Jason’s chest. He flew down at the dirt and hit the ground hard. Sollamance released the darkness and grabbed Jason’s legs. He swung him back and forth like a toy, smashing him against the ground every time. Finally, he tossed him across the dirt. Sollamance’s blade turned to smoke and slid back into his sleeve.
“You hesitated, you must never hesitate!” Sollamance spat, rubbing his neck.
“I couldn’t kill you!” Jason said, “that wouldn’t be right. After all you’ve done to help me, I can’t just kill you.”
“Ha-ha, oh Jason, don’t you see?” Sollamance chuckled, “I want you to kill me. I need to die.”
“What?!?” Jason exclaimed.
“My mission is to teach you to use your powers and in the process, end my life.” Sollamance said.
“You’re mission?” asked Jason, “This has all been about you following orders and completing a mission? Who gave you this ‘mission’ as you call it?”
“I don’t ask questions about your life, you don’t ask about mine!” Jason spat.
“No, I don’t want your damn excuses! Tell me who’s making you do this!” demanded Jason.
“We all have our superiors at one point. Mine wishes that I assist you in defeating Jackson. It is none of your business who he is and why he sent me. As for my death, that is my own choice.” Sollamance said.
“Why would you want to die?” Jason asked.
“Why do you choose to live, boy?” Sollamance asked, “Because it is what you must do. I know you are far too young to understand my reasoning, but there is a reason why I must die.”
Jason thought about those words. Maybe there was a reason why Sollamance needed to die. Maybe he wants to make amends for past actions. Either way, he seemed pretty confident about everything. Jason didn’t want to, but it seemed to be the only thing Jason could do to repay Sollamance for all his work.
“When my power unlocks, and only when it unlocks, I’ll do it, Sollamance. If that is what you feel needs to be done, I will kill you.”
“Good,” Sollamance said, “I’m glad you understand. The night is almost here. You have done enough for the day. Go home and return tomorrow night.”
“I can’t do it tomorrow.” Jason said.
“What do you mean you can’t do it tomorrow?”
“I have…a personal thing that I have to do back home.”
“A personal thing?” Sollamance said angrily, “Boy, we don’t have time to be messing around with foolish social things.”
“Sollamance, I said no!” Jason declared, “Tomorrow night is a night I need to spend at home. We can go the next night. I’ll work twice as hard.”
Sollamance wanted to say something, but stopped himself. He looked to the ground and spat. He turned around and began walking towards the nearly stream. He turned back to Jason and said, “One night, boy. But no more nights away until I choose.”
Jason nodded his head and before he could thank Sollamance, darkness rose out from the stream and surrounded him. Within moments, it faded as well as Sollamance. He was always mysterious when he left. Jason took a deep breathe and relaxed. He was happy he was going to be free for a night. Tomorrow night was after all finally the night that he would be attending the dance with Sarah.
The remainder of the night went quickly. Jason returned home and fell asleep after briefly watching the news. The news was still covering the rescue of the Presidential plane in the middle of Kansas. The big question now was ‘who is The Savior’? That was the name he had taken on now. He was now known as Savior or The Savior. He thought the name was appropriate. After all, all he had done was save people. He was glad it was nothing corny like Superman or some kind of an animal name like Eagle. Many people debated about who he could be, where he could be, and how he came to be here. They could talk about it for the longest time, but there was no possible way they could find the one hundred percent truth without Jason telling them. So far, only his three friends knew the answers to those questions, and they would never tell.
Jason had another dream about the red eyes. He approached the figure and finally made it to him. When he got close, he could see that the figure had a blade. His body was paralyzed and he could do nothing but watch as the blade piece his chest, causing him to leak blood. He dropped to his knees and looked up at the red eyes. His breathing became harder. He could feel his heart slowing. This was the end. He awoke in a panic and sweat. He was beginning to wonder if these nightmares meant anything or if it was just his darkness inside trying to break loose. Either way, he was back to reality and nothing about the Quixons would interfere with today.
It was a Saturday, so school wasn’t in session. He made himself breakfast and planned to relax for the day. He had and Sarah had agreed to meet at five that evening. His friends were going to come over and meet him at about four. They had gone through a lot of trouble for this night. Josh and Matt were the only two that had ever gone to a Prom and both decided it was an overrated wreck. They devoted their energy to Homecoming and Homecoming only. They were all dressing up to match their dates. All of the Homecoming dances had themes, but nobody ever went along with them. This year’s was circus, which Josh described as a night for freaks to show their true colors. Jason laughed thinking about him and Sarah dressing as clowns in bright colors and painted faces.
Sarah had decided to surprise Jason with what she was wearing. She told him to pick something that he liked and she would do the same. She was sure that they would look good together anyways. Jason was confident in Sarah’s choice and agreed. He decided that the most reasonable thing to do was wear a black dress shirt with black pants with a white tie. He thought about Sarah wearing something along those lines. He thought she would look good regardless, but he thought that white suited her best. The day passed quicker than Jason expected. He put on some cologne and straightened his hair. He looked at himself in the mirror. His straightened brown hair sat nicely with his black and white outfit. He was hoping Sarah would think the same thing.
The clock finally struck four and shortly after his friends knocked at his door. He opened the door to find all of his friends dressed up and looking just as excited. Matt wore a white shirt with a red tie and black pants, while Tony wore a pretty normal blue shirt, black pants and black tie. Josh, however, was dressed in a white suit with a white tie and white pants. The only thing that wasn’t white was his black undershirt. It made him look very unique, but it suited him. Jason couldn’t help but laughing though. Josh would definitely stick out.
“Wow, Josh…you look…” Jason started.
“Like a sexy beast?” Josh grinned.
“I don’t think that’s what he was going for.” Matt said.
“Yeah, I don’t think that’s what anyone was going for when they saw you.” laughed Tony.
“Oh shut up. I look good and you know it.” Josh said straightening his jacket.
The other three rolled their eyes and left Jason’s house. At the end of the woods, Jason found a limousine that his friends had rented for the night. The four guys entered the car. Matt, Tony, and Josh took their seats next to their dates. Next stop was Sarah’s house. Jason gave the driver directions. Along the way, the guys introduced their dates and they all told amusing stories. The car was filled with laughter. When they finally reached Sarah’s house, Jason opened the door and got out. Josh went to get up too, but Matt and Tony both pulled him back to his seat. He shot them a glare, but they didn’t care. This was Jason’s moment. He approached the house and walked up to the door. He knocked twice. His insides were twisting. He was so nervous, yet excited at the same time. The door opened to reveal Sarah’s father looking back at him. He stood at about the same height as Jason and had short blonde hair. He had glasses on and a tucked shirt. He looked very serious.
“Before you take my daughter out, I need to ask you something.” He said.
“Alright, shoot.” Jason answered.
“Are you a drug dealer? I feel like I am getting that vibe from you.”
Jason looked into the man’s eyes and could see that he wasn’t serious about any of this.
“No sir, but I must ask. Is there a reason why you know the vibe drug dealers give off?”
He squinted his eyes and looked back at Jason. He held out his hand and said, “Well played, son. Sarah will be down in a minute.”
Jason shook his hand and smiled. Her father smiled back and walked back into the living room. Jason waited for a moment when finally, down the staircase came Sarah. Jason felt speechless. Sarah wore hear golden hair up in a bun. She had some makeup on that really brought out her stunning blue eyes. Her smiled caused Jason’s heart to melt. She wore a white dress with a black ribbon around the waist and another black ribbon in her hair. Her shoes were black heels and gave her an extra inch or two of height. Jason couldn’t have ever imagined anything so beautiful. She reached and door and took Jason’s hand.
“Wow…,” Jason managed to finally get out. He was breathless.
“You look incredible,” Sarah said with a big smile. Her teeth were amazingly white.
“So do you,” Jason said, “I guess we ended up matching after all.”
“I knew we
