Daimati Majhi , a woman farmer from Pujariput in Kundra block of Koraput district wondered if they getting into groups and form women SHGs for better production was sufficient without the support of the administration in facilitating market facilities , timely inputs and support for ensuring irrigation facility . In her village Chanchala lost her onion crop for the lack of timely attention by the grassroot level authorities to repair the motor that was lifting water from the nearby stream .Most of the onion bulbs had dried in the hot summer without water reaching the root . She could get only one quintal of onion against a hope of two quintals . However on the face of all hardship the community was bent upon making a life out of the little opportunities and support that they get from the state , Chanchala Majhi of Pujariput added. The auto rikshaw charges Rs.30/- for the person and equal amount for one vegetable basket to carry them to the daily market at jeypore . Paying Rs.60/- for transport alone was painful for the marginal farmers , she said. The state was still to go a long way to see that women were recognised as farmers and they were in need of special attention , Sumati Mali , another woman farmer added. . They were sharing the concern and challenges of women as farmers working in the mountains and valleys of Koraput district in the district level convention on “issues and Challenges of small , marginal women farmers” at Koraput .

While there are a number of schemes and programmes that had been implemented by the government in favour of women farmers , they were still vulnerable , Mr.jena added.
Further while we talk of empowerment of women in agriculture , the prime attention invariable focused around access to and control of women over productive assets and their effective use for sustainable livelihood and income . Indira Nanda , president , Koraput Central Co-operative bank (KCC) who attended as the chief guest said . Therefore , securing property rights including the land rights for women and providing them access to different agri-extension services and markets would go a long way in improving the status of women farmers , she added.
