The other pirate chuckled and headed back up the stairs to do his captain’s bidding.
As for me and Sammy, we kept our promise and became numbered among the last of the true pirates. I never saw either my father or uncle again, and we have a price on our heads. The pirate captain has long since died, along with his first mate and many others, but by hard work and the firm decision to make the best of my circumstances, I eventually became the captain of this vile fleet – perhaps not as vile as it would have been under the command of another.
