and was about to go hiding behind a palm tree, when he felt something in his way. It was the torch. He took the torch and ran away from the site. Suddenly he had a feeling that it wasn't safe there. All these events happened and then Ganadada and Ramu returned to the box after locking up the car. In the sea, far away, a light started blinking on and off, on and off. Ganadada turned to the box for picking up the torch, but there was no torch!
”Hey ramu, You did bring that torch. Didn't you?"
"Yes."
"Then where is it?"
"Search me."
"Oh! Aren't we in a fix! Hmm Ramu you go to the car, & signal with the car headlights. Go, run. I wait here by the box."
Ramu turned back and went to the car.
Meanwhile Chimpoo strolled with the torch in his hand. After some time, he was able to operate it. He was quite a distance away from the spot where the car had stopped. In the refreshing air, he was enjoying himself with the torch, putting it on & off, on & off. Suddenly, a sleeping figure was caught in the beam. The man woke up. He was in a uniform. Suddenly Chimpoo got a whim. He focussed the torch on the face of the uniformed figure. The uniformed man put up one of his hands against the glare of the torch, and approached Chimpoo. Chimpoo put the torch off, jumped, slapped the man on head, jumped away and started running. Two other uniformed men came there. All three had badges on their breast pockets. The badge said, "Coast guards." They were surprised to see a monkey with clothes on running about with a torch and started following Chimpoo. Chimpoo somehow returned to the old place, and seeing the wooden box, halted. The coast guards held him. One of them took the torch from him. All of them were witnessing the drama going on the beach. A small canoe had landed & two white skinned men were quarrelling with Ramu & Ganadada.
The coast guards understood. They looked at each other. Then taking cover, they slowly closed in on the figures on the beach. When they were very near, one of them fired a shot in the air and the quarrel abruptly stopped. When told that they were surrounded, they surrendered.
When scholar woke up, he jumped out of bed ran to the gate. And his heartbeat almost stopped. There was on wooden box there! Frantically he searched for the box, but to no avail. Even though grown up now, he could not hold back the tears. He couldn't contain himself any longer. He went to his dad and told him everything.
"Oh, such a small matter!" Dad, said patting his back in sympathy,
"We will definitely get your Chimpoo back. Let us go to Juhu Police station. The inspector there is a friend. He will help us."
"Dad, come, let us go immediately"
Scholar said.
"Okay, okay." said Dad.
They took the car out and started for Juhu Police Station. When they went inside, they couldn't believe their eyes. Chimpoo was sitting on the table with a bunch of bananas and lots of groundnuts before him. The inspector who was a friend of Dad's was looking fondly at Chimpoo.
"There you are ! Chimpoo, there you are," shouted Scholar and went near the table. Chimpoo got down and stood holding Scholar's hand.
"Oh! You!" The Inspector said,
"And this is your son & this is his pet monkey Chimpoo, right?"
"Right !" said Dad.
"--------- and the bandits had put all the smuggling goods in a box on the fourteenth road. Due to some communication gap they took the box from the thirteenth road----"
Afterwards, the Inspector was telling, and Scholar was looking at Chimpoo with pride, who was sitting there peeling another banana.
THREE : KIDNAPPED!
That day, after the school, the group of Scholar, Mintu, Nikhil, Gauri, Julie and Lily were chatting on the way to home. Suddenly, Scholar stopped walking.
"What happened?” Nikhil asked.
"Arre, my compass-box. I forgot it on the bottom plank of the desk."
"Don't worry; you'll get it back tomorrow".
"No, I'll go just now and get it back, still they wouldn't have closed the class rooms.”
"Eh! you are so rich, buy another one if you don't get it back tomorrow!"
Gauri said with a little bit of jealousy.
"What rich!" Scholar said angrily,
"If I lose any thing, daddy gets very angry. I also feel very bad if I lose anything."
"Go ahead Scholar," Julie supported Scholar,
"One must take care of one's things."
Scholar turned back and started back towards school, taking long strides. The remaining five started homewards. There was a little shrubbery near the school. When scholar was turning the corner, there was a bit of noise in the shrubbery. Somebody, who was on the Scholar's trail from the morning, came out of the shrubbery and swiftly pressed a wad of cotton on Scholar's nose. Scholar sensed a thick, sweetish smell and then knew no more.
Everyday, Scholar's daddy returned from work almost at the same time that Scholar returned from school. Today he came home, and when even after half an hour, Scholar didn't return, he became restless. He got up from the easy chair, and came out in the garden. There was a cage made up of iron bars for Chimpoo. The door of the cage was open and Chimpoo was climbing on the cage from the outside and was playing with the iron bars. The door of the cage was kept locked, with Chimpoo inside, only during the night.
"Do you know, Chimpoo," he asked Chimpoo, "where Scholar is?"
Chimpoo did "chee-chee" in answer and started climbing a tree.
Chimpoo lived quite comfortably in the garden and was at ease with human beings. Suddenly, there was a noise of a glass window- pane breaking from of the house. Daddy ran to the back and found a window broken. Then he went to the compound and peered out, raising himself on his hands on the compound wall, but there was no one to be seen. Then he ran back in the house again and went to the room with the broken window. There was a stone wrapped in a piece of white paper lying on the floor. Eagerly, he disentangled the paper and read what was on it. It was written in a large, illiterate or rather, hardly literate hand with a lot of mistakes. But, about the purpose of the note delivered thus, there was no mistaking.
:Your son is in our custody: the note said: Bring 5 lakh tomorrow keep under third coconut tree opposite Shamiana Hotel. Bring police-kill son. Tomorrow, 6 in the morning: Reading the note daddy started sweating. Five lakh rupees! Till tomorrow! It was practically impossible. The week before, he had read about a similar incident in the newspaper. Now, what to do? That was the question. He thought for a while and then made the decision. He took the key of the office safe and in his car, started towards the office. He accepted the salute offered by the Gurkha and entered the office. He started sweating standing in front of the open safe in the inner room. In one way, he was deceiving his business partners, his employees, the shareholders. But, what to do? There wasn't any other way out. He took out 5 lakh rupees and put these into the empty brief case. Closed the safe, and accepting the Gurkha's salute, returned home by car. He couldn't sleep the whole night. He kept strolling in the garden. When he passed Chimpoo's cage for the third time, Chimpoo caught his attention by shouting "Chee-Chee". He stopped.
"How to tell you Chimpoo? The goondas have kidnapped Scholar and are, demanding five lakh rupees."
Chimpoo came out of his cage. Looked in daddy's eyes sadly, and patted his cheek in sympathy. At long last, Daddy went in and kept turning in the bed, sleepless. As the 5 O'clock alarm went off, he was awake. He silenced the alarm, hurried by, finished his morning chores, collected the brief case and started with it for the car. As he came into the garden. Chimpoo caught hold of daddy's hand, and started seizing the briefcase. Last night, no one had locked his cage door.
"Let go Chimpoo, this brief case is very important" he said and held the briefcase close to his chest. Chimpoo nodded as if he understood what was said. Daddy turned to the car and he started the car. At the same time, Chimpoo took two swift jumps to the car, where he boarded lightly on the roof of the car and lay down supine. Daddy didn't know this and took the car to Varsova. There, he stopped in front of ‘Shamiana'. He took the briefcase, walked to the third coconut tree opposite to 'Shamiana' and deposited it below the tree. Suddenly there was a buzzing sound and a knife sang past his ear and stuck into the trunk of the coconut tree. A rogue disguised as a fisherman came forward toying with another knife. He removed the knife from the trunk, bent down, opened the briefcase, was satisfied with what he saw, straightened, and then said in a gruff voice,
"Keep on walking straight along the coast, at about one kilometer from here, you will find your son, hand and feet tied, but safe and sound. And don't turn back a single time, or else, a knife, like just now, will come and stick in your heart, straight way."
"Okay," said Daddy dully and kept on walking in the direction indicated by the rogue.
But the rogue and Daddy, both didn't know that a third person was watching all these happenings. Right! That third person was Chimpoo. As the car stopped, he climbed down from the car-top, and kept on watching the events. When Daddy went towards the palm, Chimpoo, like a shadow went to the neighboring palm and climbed up silently. Even if he was a monkey, he was an intelligent one that used to perform tricks on the streets. He used to live with humans and was domesticated. He remembered that Daddy had clutched the briefcase to his chest and was reluctant to part with it.
The rogue along with the briefcase hardly took two steps forward, when something heavy dropped on his neck, and two hairy and clawed hands started scratching his face. Chimpoo, sticking to him like a limpet, bit his entire ear at the root. The briefcase slipped from his grasp which Chimpoo picked up, climbed at the tree-top and jumping from tree to tree vanished, reappeared near 'Shamiana’, and went flat against the car-top, invisible in the luggage carrier, along with the briefcase. The rogue when stopped spluttering and removing the sand from his mouth, found the briefcase gone, sweared heavily and went from tree to tree looking at the tree-tops. Suddenly, some other monkey jumped from one tree to other. The rogue thought it to be the same monkey as Chimpoo, and collecting some stones, started aiming at him. The monkey was very surprised, and deciding to say it with coconuts, picked up one coconut, aimed it squarely at the head of the rogue, and hit the target right on the mark. Receiving, the coconut on the coco, the rogue's nut went blimp and he dropped to the ground he knew not where, and was unconscious lying there like a log.
In the meanwhile, daddy reached the rocks. His temples became heated. He felt anger rising. He carefully untied scholar knot by knot. Then he rubbed his pinched wrists and ankles to restart the circulation. Then he started walking with him to the car.
"Scholar,"
”Hey ramu, You did bring that torch. Didn't you?"
"Yes."
"Then where is it?"
"Search me."
"Oh! Aren't we in a fix! Hmm Ramu you go to the car, & signal with the car headlights. Go, run. I wait here by the box."
