Lombardi Pack lands faded behind them, giving way to the inner city of Encantado as they drove south, yet Fabiana couldn’t bring herself to view the sights. She was stuck, watching the man across from her in hesitant awe.
“Some men may find your intelligence intimidating, Fabiana. I am not one of those men.”
“Will you beat it out of me?” Fabiana covered her mouth, eyes wide. She hadn’t meant to say that out loud and give voice to her fears.
Adonis glared at her, his brows low over his eyes. “You are asking the wrong questions, pequeña.”
Lightning fast, he reached out and palmed her neck, dragging her body next to his. Only her hands pushing ineffectively against his side kept her from being plastered to him.
Warm, mint-scented breath slid across her cheek as he leaned down. “The questions is: will you allow it?”
“What sort of answer is that?”
His fingers tightened, pressing into her pounding pulse. “It’s the answer that makes sense to your pointless question. You know why no one would dare lift their hand to me? Because I will hit them back harder. They won’t take something from me because I will take everything from them. I would allow nothing.”
She struggled against him, the threat of his body, the anger in his hushed tone. “So I was beaten because I allowed it.”
“You do not blame the cat for tucking tail because of a harsh master.”
“Dog. A dog tucks their tail.” She peered at him. “English isn’t your first language.”
“No.”
He pulled back a bit from her. The momentary hesitance in his face was gone in a blink of an eye, but she saw it. The boy behind the man. The thing others could see as a weakness in him.
She licked her lips. “I would never ridicule you for it. I … just noticed it. You misspeak idioms and talk overly proper at times.”
Silence hung between them for a heartbeat before he nodded. “And I won’t ever throw your past in your face,” he promised. “Fabiana, I speak of now. I would never touch you that way because you wouldn’t allow it. It’s not about my disposition to never touch a woman that way. If I want to have you, I know what you will and will not allow. I can’t hit you and gain your trust. I can’t break you and wish for you to love me. I have to follow your rules to get what I want.”
“And what do you want?”
His lips hovered over hers, so close she could taste their kiss from earlier. The memory was imprinted on her skin.
“You, Fabiana. You in every way you let me have you. Every way. There is so much power in permission, pequeña.”
And then his mouth was on hers.
She didn’t deny him. Didn’t push him away to break the contact.
Tentatively, she gave in, testing this new place between them and exploring what he spoke of.
Her nails curled into the silk of his shirt, pulling him closer until he wrapped his arms around her and lifted her off the car seat. Balanced in his strength, she nipped at his lips and licked away the sting.
He followed her, mimicking her actions until her heart raced and her head felt light.
Large, hot hands spanned her lower back, dragging her into closer contact, to the hardness of his thigh. In this position she couldn’t get into the right position to relieve the ache between her legs, so she pinched her thighs together instead.
A guttural sound broke free and she gasped.
It was her.
He made her like this.
No. He’ll break me.
She pushed then, breaking the kiss. “No.”
Adonis lowered his mouth to her ear. “One day you’re going to let me take you until you’re screaming. You’re going to let me kiss and suck on your pussy until you never care about another man’s touch. And then, I’m going to take you on every surface you beg me to. Do you know why, Fabiana?”
She couldn’t think or form a coherent thought as he spun fantasy in her head.
“Because you’re going to demand what you want, and I’m going to be more than happy to give it to you.”
He placed her back on the seat next to him, leaving his arm around her side to anchor her to him. Taking deep breaths, Fabiana tried to get her heaving chest under control. Adonis leaned forward and gripped something on the floor before he sat back and lowered it onto her lap.
Uccellino.
He remembered to pick up the damn bird.
Adonis was dangerous to her psyche.

He left her alone for the remainder of the ride.
They passed closer to the southern side of Encantado and Fabiana couldn’t take her gaze away. The drive had taken a few hours due to the construction and repair of damaged areas from the last attack and re-routed streets. Encantado was wounded but rebuilding together.
The Moonstone Pack lands rose like a gem in the rubble, dazzling bright lights of a rainbow of colors from steel flowers, rollercoasters, and even a hologram of a dancing Fire Mage playing with her element. She was breathtaking, clad in only swirling flames as she leapt and twisted in the air. To her left, a much different hologram played out with a woman of a man’s dreams with vibrant red hair hanging under the gold feathers of her headdress. Her bra and underwear were made of diamonds and rubies, the rubies right over her nipples and between her thighs, and she spun gold feather fans at her side with practiced ease.
“Wow.”
“Blaze the Wonderous Fire and Starlett, our headliner at the Hipnotizada, Moonstone’s premier casino. They came up with the idea for the hologram last year and it tripled their sales.”
“I’m sure.”
“But that isn’t what I wanted to show you.”
