Elizabeth smiled and kissed her daughter on the head, wiping a crumb away from her lips.
“I am so verra glad ye did, darling. I’ve missed ye since breakfast.”
Sarah giggled, then turned around and ran out of the drawing-room. A second later, Elizabeth heard a peal of laughter and a jovial growl. She found her husband tossing Sarah playfully into the air.
Leaning against the doorframe to the drawing-room, she watched the scene unfolding before her, not for a second regretting her decision to come back to Terrence. From the moment she’d walked through the front door, her happiness had grown day by day. And at some point along the way, she’d learned to forgive herself for not having done so earlier.
Terrence set Sarah down, and the child scurried off with the governess, both of them singing a nursery rhyme.
“My lord,” Elizabeth said when her husband’s gaze swept over her.
“My countess.” He kissed her tenderly. “I’ve had news.”
“News?”
“Yes.” He took her hand and drew her across the way to his study, where he shut the door behind them both. “We’ve found them.”
There was only one “them” that they’d been looking for.
Elizabeth’s mouth went dry. “Ye have? Already?”
“Yes. They’ve been arrested. Both of them in Newgate.”
“And your coin?”
“Not much of it left now, but what was recovered, I’ve received. I’m adding it to the trust I’ve set up for Sarah.”
“Trust?”
“Every child of mine will have their own trust.”
Elizabeth’s throat constricted with emotion. “Thank ye.”
Terrence pulled her into his arms. “The men will be punished for what they did to Linden. And I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to make it up to the two of you.”
Elizabeth shook her head. “Ye need no’ do that. Your love is enough.”
Terrence kissed her lightly, staring into her eyes. “That you have in abundance.”
“Well, there is one more thing…Perhaps tomorrow I may cancel all of the morning callers?”
Terrence chuckled. “What shall we do instead?”
“Lie in bed all day?”
“I think that sounds perfectly splendid.” Terrence swept her up in his arms and carried her toward the stairs. “I say we start right now.”
Elizabeth grinned. “I knew I loved ye for a reason.”
