As we sit around ordering margaritas, and Bentley talks about all his ideas for future scenes, I search inside myself, wondering if I’m truly ready and seeking some apprehension in me that surely exists. But when that apprehension doesn’t come, when the foreboding doesn’t hit, I simply smile and reach across the table to grab Bentley’s hand.
He stops mid-sentence, looking at me, tilting his head like an adorable puppy, and smiling.
“Yes, Daddy?” he asks.
“Nothing, sweet boy. I’m just really happy.”
His whole face lights up in a way that I’m quickly becoming addicted to. The boy is beautiful at any time, but when he smiles? Man. I’ve never seen anything like it. Bentley makes me want to raise my game. He makes me feel like the man I could have been if I hadn’t let Arian sidetrack me.
I guess the best feeling that I have today is realizing that I’m not actually as broken as I thought I was. All those months I spent at home alone, thinking there was no way I would be ready to go back, nearly dissipated the minute I laid eyes on Bentley.
I’m not in love with him. Not yet. That much I know, but I’m definitely interested in the future and what the two of us might get up to. He’s so full of excitement and possibilities that it’s contagious, and I know that allowing him in my life is one of the better decisions I’ve made.
And having my best friend return to Los Angeles at some point is more than I ever could have hoped for. I don’t want to jinx anything, but life is starting to feel pretty damn good.
“What are you having for dinner, Daddy?” Bentley asks me as he gazes down at the menu.
“Probably the same thing I always get, a shredded chicken chimichanga.”
“Ooh, that sounds good.” He nods. “But I think I’m gonna get cheese enchiladas. I really like cheese enchiladas.”
“Have whatever you want, boy, you’ve had a big day.”
“Thanks, Daddy.”
We continue talking and eating once our food has arrived, and I think about what kind of reward I can give my boy later. We haven’t talked about rewards and punishments just yet, so I’m not sure what he thinks the reward might be, but I have a feeling it has something to do with providing service. I’ll be sure to ask him as soon as we’re alone again.
Back at the house, I sit next to Matteo on the couch while Bentley is in the bathroom.
“Dude,” Matteo begins, “I’m not gonna lie. Spending time with you and Bentley is…” He sighs as he pats his chest over his heart. “It hurts. Don’t get me wrong. I am so fucking happy you found him. I think he’s perfect for you. It just reminds me of what I don’t have. Fuck, man, I sound like a selfish asshole.”
“No, you don’t. You sound like a guy who just got his heart crushed.” I pull Matty’s hand into mine. “It’s cliche, but you know it’s true. He wasn’t the one. Just like Arian wasn’t the one for me. The perfect boy is going to show up for you too. Very soon. I feel it.”
He turns his head toward me, a sideways grin tugging at his lips. “Why is that? Is Bentley some kind of good luck talisman?”
I cock my head. “Maybe he is. Things seem a little brighter now.”
“Like I said, super happy for you.” He looks over his shoulder. “You said he’s not a little?”
“That’s what he said. Why?”
“He has a childlike quality sometimes.”
“I noticed. I think he’s just happy. He hasn’t shown any other signs.”
“That’s good. I know that’s not your thing.”
“No.”
“To each their own. I tried it once, but we didn’t connect like I’d hoped.”
“Bummer.”
“It is. I just want someone to take care of. Even getting Bentley out of that situation today was...so satisfying. It felt like my purpose, even though he’s not my boy.”
I smile, nodding in understanding. “It was pure instinct for me. It’s how we’re wired.”
“That. It feels like I’m locked in a cage. Maybe that’s why I held on so tightly to something that wasn’t working.”
I chuckle. “Also relate.”
He nudges my shoulder with his. “We’re a pair, aren’t we?”
“We are.”
“Can I come back?” Bentley’s sweet voice comes from the hallway.
“Of course.” I pat my lap, and he happily shuffles over and climbs up. “What took you so long?”
Bentley scrunches his nose. “You shouldn’t ask me things like that. I was in the bathroom.”
His feigned petulance draws a smile to my lips. “My apologies.”
“You’re forgiven.” His eyes shift to Matty. “Um, when do I get my reward?”
Matty nearly groans before clearing his throat.
“Rewards are for private time.”
Bentley shakes his head. “No, Daddy. I want to do something nice for you and Matteo for helping me today.”
My brow furrows. “Nice like what?”
“Well, we already had dinner, so maybe I could make you both a nightcap? Or dessert? Do you have ice cream? Or I could rub your feet. That would be nice too.”
Matty’s mouth drops open wide enough to catch a fly.
“Um, a cocktail sounds nice. You, Matty?”
“Yeah, sure.”
Bentley’s face lights up. “Ooh.” It’s a whisper. “What do you like?”
“The whiskey you brought. Rocks.”
“Same,” Matty says.
“Be right back.”
He bounces toward the kitchen, leaving both of us stunned.
“Jesus,” Matty whispers. “He’s excited by that?”
“He considers it a reward. I’d rather pull his pants down and spank his gorgeous ass.”
Matty laughs. “I guess that’s your reward.”
“I’m sure he can be persuaded.”
“Sounds like he’d do anything you wanted.”
I nod, rubbing my forehead. “It’s heady. He’s the exact opposite of Arian, which makes
