I should have known better. I softly run my fingers through his hair, and he tightens his grip on me. He’s sleeping so soundly, but I know that I have to get up. Lily will get upset if she wakes up and I’m not there.
I softly push my way out of Dillon’s grasp and make my way to the main room where I’d left my phone. There are quite a few text messages from Fly. I hope Dillon didn’t hurt him.
I slide the indicator on my phone and find his number. I call him and he answers after the third ring.
"Yeah." His voice is gravelly, sounds like he just woke up. When I look over to the clock, I see that It’s already past one in the morning. I should have woken up earlier.
"Sorry, I’m sorry. Can you bring Lily over? Or I can come and get her." I keep my voice low, I don’t want to wake Dillon up.
"Is it safe?"
"What the heck does that mean?"
"Just the other day you were set against seeing that dude again, then he shows up and things are what, all better?" I could hear the disbelief in his voice.
"No, not all better, but we can get there. He’s a good man. He made a mistake and he’s paying for it. I’ve made him suffer enough." My voice is harsher than I would like for it to be.
"If you say so. I want you both to be happy. I just don’t want either of you being hurt in the process."
"I know Fly. Me too." I sigh out and hear something behind me. I turn around in surprise to see Dillon posted up at the doorway just watching me on the phone. "Bring Lily please."
I hang up before he has anything to say. I can tell in Dillon’s eyes that he is uneasy with Fly. I don’t want there to be any more animosity then there has to be.
"Who was that?" Dillon asks as he moves toward me.
"Fly, Lily doesn’t like waking up without me. She gets scared."
"Do you make it a habit to call him at all fucking times of the night?" He snaps at me.
"When it concerns my daughter, I’ll call him whenever the fuck I need to." I snap right back and then take a deep breath. "Why are you fighting me, did you want me to leave her there?"
"No."
"Then what is the problem?"
He looks away, "I feel like he’s trying to take my place. I’m not ready to give it up."
Oh Lord. "Dillon, I need you to listen to me." I move closer to him and grab his face so that he is focused on me. "There has never been anything with me and him. I’m sure when he first saw me, he might have been attracted in some way. But after five minutes of being around each other we have been nothing, but very good friends. Please don’t make this more than it is."
He nods once. The doorbell rings and I let him go. "Come in." I say.
Max is the first one to trot in when Fly opens the door. He makes his way up to Dillon licks his hand and then walks over to his bed to sleep. I take a step forward to take a sleeping Lily out of Fly’s arms, but he turns her away from me.
"Now that there is someone in a less delicate condition here, maybe you shouldn’t be lifting her up." He yawns and walks over to Dillon.
"You want to take her?"
Dillon takes the sleeping child out of Fly’s arms and there’s no cursing or punching. I will say that’s a win.
"Thanks." He turns and walks with her in the direction of the bedrooms leaving me and Fly standing in the living room.
"So, you leaving now?" Fly asks right away.
"I have no idea. I don’t’ think so. I don’t think I could be in the club scene right now. At least not until I give birth."
"Just don’t leave without saying bye, you hear?"
"Never."
Fly turns around and walks his way to the front door. "Tell me were you faking?" He speaks low.
"What?" I ask having to move closer to him to hear what he was saying.
He turns around, "I counted five times. That’s fucking impossible."
I let my head fall back and laugh. "I actually think it was six. Why do you think I’ve missed him so much?"
Fly sucks his teeth and turns to the door, "Tell your husband I need tips."
"I teach a class on Tuesdays and every other Sunday." Dillon calls out from the back obviously well aware of what we are talking about.
I laugh harder and have to cover my mouth to keep from waking Lily.
When Dillon walks back out with a smile on his face, I know things are going to be alright.
* * *
The next few days Dillon and I rekindle our relationship. Every time I look at him, he is staring at me with all the adoration of a newlywed husband. He doesn’t shy away from the baby bump and talks to the baby every day. For a hardened killer, this man really knows how to break down my defenses. I’m still intensely worried about the child not being his, but every loving gesture and kiss gives me hope that maybe it will be ok.
It’s still a bit tense between Fly and Dillon, but at least they aren’t fighting each other any longer. Roth went on his way the next day after they got here. I wasn’t sure if they had made plans to ride out together, but it’s evident Dillon had no intention of leaving any time soon. After the fifth day of him wearing the same clothes I
