He started up the engine and crawled along behind the woman. She had a determined stride going on. She upped her pace as she entered the main street. He decided to put his foot down, go past her. Adam studied her in his wing mirror as he passed and then circled back at the end of the road instead of turning right with the flow of traffic.
He drove down a side road and again pulled onto the main street, his heart skipping several beats. Where is she? Shit! She was there one minute and gone the next.
Slamming his fists onto the steering wheel, he pressed hard on the accelerator and peered into every road he drove past. There she was, down the second one. He chose to drive through the next available street, hoping it would lead to the one she was walking down. To his relief, it did. Before long, he was crawling along behind her again. The road grew narrower; he peered up ahead, there was a ‘no entry’ sign blocking his path.
It was now or never.
He parked the car, leapt out of the vehicle and casually approached her. She eyed him with caution and stepped to the edge of the pavement to give him room to pass.
His erection stood to attention and was on the verge of becoming painful. Doubling back, he hooked an arm around her neck, and cupped his other hand over her mouth, preventing her from screaming. She stomped on his foot and kicked out at his shins, catching him once or twice on the bony part. “You fucking bitch. You’ll pay for that.”
She mumbled something under his palm and then tried to bite him. He was quick to respond and slammed an elbow in her face. She cried out beneath his hand.
“Fighting the inevitable is only going to make things worse. Give in to it and I might even keep you alive at the end of it.”
She bit his palm again, and this time her teeth connected properly and did some damage. Adam yelled out and watched the blood trickle from his hand onto the woman’s uniform.
“Jesus, you fucking whore.”
He pounded her with his fists until she was lying on the ground, gasping for breath. They both were. She sobbed and pleaded with him to let her go.
“No chance, not until I’ve had what’s under that uniform.”
She wriggled beneath him as he undid the zip to his trousers. “No, please. I don’t want this.”
“No, but I do, and I have every intention of winning this game. Keep still and I’ll set you free afterwards. I know where you live. If you fight me, I’m going to come after your flatmate.” He took a punt that she was single, sharing a house or flat with another woman, knowing how far a nurse’s salary would likely get her.
Her wriggling ceased.
He got to work.
She lay there motionless, staring up at the night sky. He did the deed, then reached into the back of his trousers and pulled out the ten-inch blade he favoured. Adam pressed his hand down harder over her mouth. She tried to cry out, her eyes clouded with fear as the knife rose above his head and then pierced her chest.
Not once, twice or three times, but four.
The best part was yet to come.
He watched on and saw the light fade from her eyes, and then her struggling beneath him became a thing of the past.
He zipped up his trousers and jumped to his feet. Once he realised he hadn’t used a condom this time, he kicked out at her body. Shit! She proved to be too tempting, I slipped up. He removed his jacket and used it to wipe out her vagina. His frustration and anxiety grew at the thought of getting caught, so he rubbed harder to get rid of any possible DNA. Then he ran back to the car and drove off. He stopped a few streets away and dumped his jacket in one of the bins at the back of a small shop. Maybe I should have burned her damn body instead. He shrugged and turned on the stereo.
Taking a life meant nothing, as long as it worked out well for him.
Now he was mobile again, and the world was his oyster, except it wasn’t, not right now. He had one more task to do before he could leave town and start over somewhere new. He’d only shown up in this dump to be close to his father after he’d deserted him all those years ago. Now, he was no longer going to be around, so why remain in Hereford? A dump of a so-called city. Ha! Just because it has a cathedral. It’s a bloody dive other than that.
He arrived back at the spot where he’d managed to park the car earlier, before he was distracted and his other needs had taken over. Exhausted by his efforts from pinning the nurse down, his eyes drooped. I’ll catch forty winks while I can. He drifted off, and the crimes he’d committed in the past three days surfaced and played havoc with his mind. But the image that was prominent in his dreams was the one of his father being taken away by the police. Maybe he should have helped him in some way. But four coppers had shown up, what could he have done to stop them from taking him? Nothing!
Stirring from his restless dozing, he wiped the sleep out of his eyes. A siren sounded in the distance. Is this the one he’d been waiting for? Of course, there was every chance the ambulance had already deposited the man at the hospital while he was indisposed following the damn
