“I don’t trust you.”
That was obvious, and he tried to ignore the hurt beating in his chest. He didn’t know what she knew, but considering the state of the lab, someone had opened their mouth about something that didn’t concern them. When he found out who it was, they’d be begging for him to end them by the time he was finished.
He laid her out, careful of the glass in her feet and side before grabbing her lab coat and covering her with it. Raphael may be his brother, but he didn’t want him seeing her naked.
“I’ll get you the first aid kit.”
“Don’t bother, Raph. I don’t have the time to wait.”
With careful hands, Adonis removed the glass, increasing his Alpha call to buffer the pain as much as he could. Then he bent and licked at the particularly nasty wound on her left heel. She’d need stitches, but he had a better idea.
“Shift,” he demanded, and she did with a yell. “Shift.”
The motion was violent as she once more became a woman, but the minor cuts were gone and the bad one on her foot was nothing more than a red line that would fade in a few minutes. It wouldn’t have worked if she had stayed in wolf form longer or if he hadn’t added the healing quality of his saliva, but as his mate, his gift was spread directly to her better.
“Release me.”
“Are you going to get down from the table?”
Fabiana’s glare was enough answer for him. He sighed, shaking his head. How anyone believed this woman to be meek and terrified was beyond him. In the weeks she’d spent among the Moonstone, she’d gained her voice, and he was so proud of her for it. Now, though, it presented a particular problem.
“You can leave.”
Raphael followed the directive with a nod. Adonis didn’t look at his mate. Instead, he took time to grab the broom and dustpan from the eye wash station area. The mundane action of cleaning up the glass soothed his frayed nerves until he could think more clearly.
Seeing Fabiana like that—her eyes red from shed tears and her hair in disarray—did things to his psyche. He supposed there should have come a time for them to be at odds, the steady build of a relationship between them had been too smooth. Nothing in either of their lives ever came about that easily.
But he hadn’t wanted it to be like this.
Some stupid thing he said or a situation they misunderstood, sure.
But this …
Fabiana wanted to leave him. She’d destroyed the place she loved so much and would have disappeared without a word if Billie hadn’t had the presence of mind to get Raphael because she thought something wasn’t right.
He’d build that woman a fucking monument if she wanted it.
With the glass gone and the equipment lifted back onto the tables as best he could manage, Adonis forced himself lock the door to the lab and lean against it, his gaze resting on his mate. The moment was suspended between them, the quiet before the inevitable storm. The minute he removed his Alpha call hold on her, she was off the table and on her feet.
Commenting on how beautiful she was in her anger as she stuffed her arms in her lab coat without buttoning it probably wasn’t the best thing to do at the moment. Still, his wolf recognized her, wanted to pin her down and make sure she knew just who she belonged to.
“Move, Adonis.”
“Not happening.”
“There is nothing to talk about.”
“I believe there is. Why did you do this?”
Fabiana picked up the nearest microscope and hurled it at him. He ducked, and it dented the door where his head had been moments ago.
“That isn’t telling me anything.”
“I want you to move.”
“And I already told you I’m not going anywhere. Now what the hell happened to make you want to leave?”
She placed her hands on her hips, opening the lab coat wider so her breasts were visible. He stifled a groan.
“You used my suits for a shipment? To kill someone?”
He froze. “Who told you?”
And if they did, why the fuck was she so mad?
She yelled and picked up another instrument.
“If you throw that, I’m going to put you back under. Talk to me.”
“I was painting. I’m such an idiot. I didn’t see you in it. It scared me. I was terrified that something had happened to you, but it didn’t even matter. Of course, you wouldn’t be on the battlefield. Too taken with your business, huh?”
His English was good, but he wasn’t following. He had no idea what she meant. “You had another prophetic painting? And it showed you what I did?”
“Yes, I had one and you weren’t beside me. It doesn’t matter. You knew I didn’t want the suits to be used for anything other than protecting wolves. That’s what you convinced me they’d be used for, but you lied. I heard you talking with Russel and Yanni.”
The meeting. It clicked into place and rage spread through his chest. “I did what I had to do. You’re going to blame me for that? We’re at war, Fabiana.”
“I know that! That’s the point. We’re at war and you’re out there lining your pockets with blood money.”
He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Fabiana, what exactly did you hear?”
She frowned. “I just told you.”
“Nothing more?”
“What else did I need to her?”
He growled, slamming his fist against the door behind him. “Maybe the whole fucking story. The shipment is for black market weapons with bullets infused with magic. They can be used to attack magical beings. They may be more effective against the Hollows since we can’t shoot the bastards and are forced to fight them in
