mercifully brief.

“Thank God I had an empty stomach,” Kono said as they disembarked. “That was a nightmare.”

They walked to baggage claim and Shiro ran past him to an old lady waiting for them by the carousel.

“Grandma!” he shouted.

Kono didn’t know what he expected, but she was a sweet old thing and she hugged Kono with warmth and arms of steel.

“Your mother is at the house,” she said. “Let’s go.”

Being a small airport, the old lady had parked her Ford truck out front without any hassles and tossed their suitcases in the back like lumps of old coal. A black Labrador sitting in the cabin of the truck refused to sit in the bed, so all four of them squeezed in front.

“The dog has bad breath,” Kono said.

“No that’s me,” the old lady said.

Kono laughed. She was a crack up. He had no idea why he felt so tense all of a sudden. He’d been crabby since they’d left Honolulu.

I want to be alone with Shiro. That’s what I want.

“You look better alive than dead,” she said.

“Thanks. I feel better alive than dead.”

She drove along the coast and Kono stopped talking…and thinking. He’d never been anywhere as remote or as lovely. He thought about Tokyo and how confined he’d felt there. Only Shiro, lovely Shiro, who’d experienced Tokyo and the Yaks with him would ever understand this blessing of space.

As they turned along a road announcing Waipouli Beach, Kono thought he’d gone to heaven.

“You’re staying right next door to us. Your aunty’s house is a bit cramped and the neighbours said we could use their house for a week. They’ve gone to Seattle to visit her mom.”

Great, Kono thought. I have my Yakuza to myself.

They let themselves into their new digs.

“The door was unlocked?” Kono asked.

“This is Kauai,” she said, as if this explained everything.

“We’ll find you something a little more permanent next week, plenty of houses up the beach. No worries!” grandma said. She hugged her grandson and then hugged Kono again as they dropped their bags and went next door.

“He’s a nice meaty one, huh?” she asked Shiro.

“Yes, grandma, he sure is.”

Kono laughed.

Siono sat at the living room table of which they had a direct view from the kitchen door as they walked in. She was beautiful, but frail looking with deep circles under her eyes. She gave Shiro a girlish little wave, looking hollow-eyed and exhausted.

“I can’t stand up,” she said. Her face crumpled when her son hugged her.

“Mama, I need to lie down,” she said.

Her eyes took on a vacant look Kono had seen on the faces of other trauma victims. She was in for a long recovery, but at least she was away from the man who’d hurt her.

Shiro’s grandma helped her get up. Kono was shocked to see how frail she was. Shiro’s aunty bustled in from the other part of the house bearing fresh cigar-flower leis she’d made for both men. Kono was astonished at the vibrancy of colours and the faint scent of the tubular petals.

“You made these?” he asked as she slipped his over his head.

“Of course.” She made a big fuss of Shiro claiming he was too skinny.

She was a big Hawaiian woman and Kono liked her instantly. She appeared to have no Asian blood so he wondered how she could be an aunty, but he didn’t ask.

“Aunty Nina is a kahuna,” Shiro said. “She is a very powerful woman. She is my godmother.”

Nina glanced at Kono. “You’re going to love it here,” she said. “Trust me.”

She went off to the kitchen and returned with a platter of sandwiches and two bottles of Hawaiian pineapple soda.

Kono and Shiro accepted the offerings. Shiro’s grandma soon came back.

“She’s asleep. She’s okay…Aunty Nina started work on her this morning. She needs a lot of rest and a lot of food.”

Shiro held her hands.

“You look tired, grandma.”

“I’m fine.” She glanced at the wall clock. “Why don’t you take your man and show him our beach and come back for dinner…say around six?”

“Okay, grandma. What are you going to do?”

She grinned. “I’m gonna play bingo down at the church hall.”

Back at their house, the two men looked for the bedroom. They stripped naked and hugged and kissed, Kono loving the sensation of having Shiro back in his arms.

“We can skinny dip,” Shiro said.

“Skinny dip? That’s not quite what I had in mind.”

“Yeah…you’ll see. You will be very happy in just a few minutes.”

Kono didn’t think so, as he pulled his shorts back on over his painful erection. They left their house and walked out the back door straight to the beach.

“Wow, it’s beautiful.” Kono held Shiro’s hand. “I don’t get it. How come it’s a beautiful, sunny day and the beach is perfect and we’re the only two people on it?”

Shiro grinned. “It’s not a popular beach and we like to keep it that way. I want you to fuck me in the ocean…and then we’ll take a walk along the sand, okay?”

Kono gaped. “Babe…the water looks pretty rough.”

“See that’s what everyone thinks. It’s a gentle giant. Like you.”

Shiro dropped his shorts, leaving them on the sand.

Kono watched the sweet ass he coveted disappearing into the churning surf. He watched Shiro negotiating the waves. He laughed happily, turning around to Kono.

“Please come in,” he said. “The water is fantastic.”

Kono’s senses spiralled. He might really have found paradise. He dropped his shorts, liking the feel of the sun beating down on his totally naked body. Shiro waded towards him and Kono grabbed him, holding him in his arms. Shiro wrapped his legs around Kono who stumbled into the surf with him. The blast of cold water exhilarated him, as did his lover’s insistent, hard cock jutting against his belly.

Deeper in the water, Shiro’s feet pawed at Kono’s back.

“Fuck me,” he kept saying into Kono’s ear. “I gotta have that cock.”

Kono braced his feet in the soft, sinking sand below the water’s surface. He held his lover’s ass in his hands as his cock worked at entering him.
