“Well, who are they? Where will she be living?” “In Oxford, Charlotte will be living in Oxford” “Oxford? Who do you know in Oxford?” “Well, you know Emma worked as a lady in waiting for her Ladyship.” She nodded and he continued, “When Em passed, she said if there was anything she could do to help, I just had to ask. So, a few weeks ago I wrote the Darlings a letter and yesterday, they replied saying that they would be delighted to have her, for however long I need.” “Oh my God.” “It will be quite an upheaval for her, I know but it’ll be for the best in the long run.” “When does she go?” “Monday.” “Monday, but today’s Friday!” He rolled his eyes and she said: “When do you go?” And when he said: “Wednesday.” She nearly hit the roof. “Wednesday? You’re off your rocker, Robert!” He laughed, before going up to explain to his daughter.
It all seemed to go quite quickly after that, Charlotte spent the next two days, packing. This is impossible, she thought as she packed, how is it possible to fit your whole life into a suitcase? Aunt Harriet tidied the house and Robert packed his cases and sent telegrams to the Darlings to finalise the details for Charlotte’s stay. By eight O’clock Monday evening, Charlotte and her father were stood in the train station, waiting for the train to Oxford to come in. Charlotte had cried all morning, no matter how much her father reassured. “Everything will be fine, sweetheart,” he said as he hugged her, “you’ll love it there.” “No, I won’t.” She mumbled. “You will, I promise you.”
