Zormna’s jaw dropped.
“You can’t do that!” she snapped. “All Patrol business goes to the Kevin first!”
The Alea snarled. “Oh, no. The Kevin is biased in this case. You go directly to the Council. I’m not letting some pet of the Kevin get off from a punishment.”
Zormna scowled. Stomping forward, she shouted. “You just don’t want the Kevin to know the truth. The Council won’t listen to him or to me. You know that, you roach.”
“Listen, you little flea! You are not going to slander my reputation. I earned this, and no flymite speck of an Aver is going to take that from me. I don’t care if the Kevin favors you. He can’t help you out of trouble this time.” The Alea grabbed her arm and jerked her toward the door.
Zormna immediately yanked out of his hold. “Let go! Scrapes, I can go there myself. I know where it is.”
She turned in a stiff march out of the hall. But she knew what going to the Council meant. She had been there a number of times before. But this time…this time might be her last. Zormna dreaded what it might do to her. They would never believe the truth. They were already biased against her, and that was difficult to change. She could see Alea Tenngar’s proud walk over her shoulder. She scowled. It was him. He did it, and she would be framed for it.
Standing up straight, Zormna lifted her chin. No. She refused to fry for what he did. She had saved those officers. She was not in the wrong, he was. She would fight. She would fight him. She would fight the Council. And if she knew the Kevin and Alea Arden, they would believe her and fight with her. If the council did not believe her it did not matter.
No, it did matter. She shuddered as she took yet another step forward. It mattered. Zormna knew it. She was going to her doom.
