Kipling chose to make the first move. There was no point in waiting. She removed the Makarov from her pocket, charged the pistol by pulling back on the slide, stood straight-legged, and, with both hands, aimed at Wolf. She hadn’t expected to encounter such a situation so soon.
“Don’t do that, August! I don’t want to kill you, but I will if you give me no choice.”
Kipling’s plea had no effect. Wolf’s right hand lunged for the gun. Simultaneously, he spun 360 degrees while stepping to his right, perhaps thinking that a moving target would be harder to hit. Unfortunately, for a man his size, this rotation came across more like slow motion.
As he came fully around and faced Kipling squarely, Wolf raised his weapon.
Kipling had no choice. She snapped off two rounds. The resulting explosion of the nine-millimeter within the confined space was deafening. August Wolf was dead before he hit the floor.
Paul Mark Tag received BS, MS, and PhD degrees in meteorology from Pennsylvania State University.
