Chapter 1
History of Rome
According to Roman mythology the twins Romulus and Remus founded Rome. They were left as infants to die but a pack of wolves cared for them and helped them grow up. The myth says that they founded Rome in 753 B.C. with Romulus naming the city after himself. They founded the city on the seven hills.
At first Rome was very weak. Then the Romans built a wall around the seven hills to defend themselves. They then built themselves a large army. By 264 B.C. they had conquered all of Italy.
Chapter 2
The Army of Rome
Rome’s army was very important to it’s survival against wild animals, fires, and attacks by other civilizations. The main protection came from infantry who often won against enemies because they were more disciplined soldiers and well armed. They were also good at attacking cities and building fortifications.
Roads in Rome were very important because they let soldiers move faster to battle. Merchants also used roads so trade flourished. There were 52,800 miles of road that were so well built that they lasted for centuries.

Rome’s development brought troubles with the empire of Carthage. This caused the Punic Wars. Between 264 B.C. and 146 B.C. Rome fought 3 wars with Carthage finishing in total victory. During these wars Rome conquered Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Spain, and southern France.
Julius Caesar was a famous general who dominated most of France. He was a good public speaker and well known among the Romans. He became leader of Rome but was murdered by former friends who thought Rome should be ruled under the government of Republic.
