When I was 12, I went to Cedar Rapides, Iowa for Christmas. As a young child I guess I loved Christmas but as I got older I began to dislike this holiday more and more each year. I disliked this holiday because I didn’t understand why people get all happy and bubbly for no reason. I mean it’s two days, why get all happy when all we do is take one look at the present and use it for a couple of weeks then get rid of it in the or put it in the back of our closet and never look at it again. Also I didn’t understand why people get mad about spending all that money. Last year something changed that.
Last December my sisters Ivory and Bri and I went to go pick up our sister Kiea from her job at Toys R Us. We were in the parking lot at about 8:00 and we saw people taking their time walking in and out the of store enjoying the upcoming holiday. As we waited for Kiea to get off work, I asked Ivory if I could drive. She started to laugh like I was telling the funniest joke ever (It really wasn’t that funny but she thought it was hysterical). After she stopped laughing we got out the car to wait inside. Before we could even shut the door, ivory got back in the car. I was thinking she was going to get something. So I didn’t bother to shut my door just yet, but as the car roared back to life I tried to get back into the car. I got close to the car, but Ivory shut her car door and started to drive away. Bri pulled me back before the car could run over my foot. Ivory rolled down the window and yelled, “If you can get in the car you can drive!” Bri and I looked at each other and as Ivory came back around towards us we took off for the open car door. I was faster than Bri, so she fell back and I was ahead. Since ivory wasn’t driving that fast any more I caught up with the car. I grabbed the car door with one hand and jumped in the car. My shoulder hit the other closed car door. I laid there for a while hearing my sisters laughter filled the quite car. The pain in my shoulder shot down my arm and into my hand making feel as if it was paralyzed. I propped myself up on my other arm just high enough to see my sister Bri out the car window running after the car yelling for us to stop. I plopped down on the car seat and started to laugh. We stopped to let her in the passenger side, and since I got in the car while it was going I was going to get the chance to drive.
Bri got in the back seat as Ivory moved over into the passenger side of the car and while they were doing that I jumped into the driver’s seat ready to drive. Ivory told me to put the car in drive and to step on the brake lightly. I stepped on the gas before she could finish her sentence. I wasn’t listening to her yelling at me to be careful. A family came out of the store, and I eased my foot on the brake coming to a complete stop. When they passed I proceed to go out of the parking lot and on to the street. Right as I was rounding the corner to leave the parking lot, Ivory began to scream like she was being murdered. Bri and I started to laugh, and I slammed on the brake just to make her jump. Ivory and I switched seats, and she turned the car around into the parking lot. Bri got into the driver seat and I got into the back. She then put her foot on the gas and the shot forward. The car was doing sharp U turns. Since it was about 9:00 there was no one there except the people still at work, Bri shot the car forward like a bullet leaving an AK47. She weaved the car in and out the parking spaces so fast skid marks were left behind. I was laughing and laying down enjoying the ride. Ivory turned around in the seat clutching the seat belt while yelling for me to sit up, knowing me you already know I wasn’t going to sit up. Instead I reached for the power button on the radio and Bri turned it all the way up. We were truly having the time of our life. Bri finally parked the car, and Ivory yelled for to get out so we could go inside. Bri and I got out of the car laughing our heads off. Ivory jumped in the driver side, and the car spit forward leaving us in the dust. We ran after the car, but Ivory wasn’t slowing down to let us in, so we stopped running and watched the car begin to swerve. The car stopped in front of us. Ivory got shaking from all the laughter coming out her mouth. After we stopped laughing, we went inside to what and to play guitar hero.
That was the best Christmas I can remember. When we told Kiea she laughed so hard she was going to die. For Christmas every year it’s a different story like the time I went to Minnesota to spend time with my other sisters and nieces or when I went to Texas with my friend and her family. During this experience I’ve learned that Ivory is very jumpy and I’ve also learned how to drive (a little).
