Lilly stared into the fire, although I could tell she was pushing it aside. I just looked into her eyes, searching for her train of thought. I admired how the light appeared to be spread on one side of her face-perhaps a good sign-and how the dark reflected the other. Thoughts swam through my head.
"Lilly." I whispered. She jumped up, looking around furiously.
"Huh? Ah! W-what is it?" She asked, trembling from her scare. I laughed on the inside.
"I was wondering-what you are thinking." I looked away from her and into the fire. I wondered if the light was only shown on half of my face, too.
"Huh? Why?"
"Watch." I said, remembering what Miss. Nelly had taught me. It scared the thought from me as I watched her.
"D-don't do anything dangerous!" She shouted.
"Whatever." I pulled two beans out of my pocket, one the shade of an apple and the the shade of wet Olive trees.
I threw them into the fire, watching them build up into tall, skinny figures. One, a man sitting in a rocking chair playing a violin and the other-
A women, walking past, rich with a fur scarf around her neck.
"I must have done something wrong. That women wasn't there before." I said, blankly staring into the fire.
The man looked up to the women and-
Spoke.
"W-what?" Lilly screamed.
"Ch-change for the poor." The man held up a cup to the women, his hand shaking with his hunger. The women shook her head and knelt down beside of his chair, looking up at him.
"Beyond the land, beyond the sea, there is this place, where the stars are so big they meet the earth," She said, "they purify our hearts. We all fail to reach it." I gasped. It was just like Miss. Nelly had told me, but this time I understood. We all fail to purify our hearts with goodness, gladness that could make peace become of us.
"I-I'm telling mom." Lilly said, pulling at the collar of her dress. She turned and ran, faster than I have ever seen her.
I only stared into the fire.
"You! Boy!" I fell back and screamed. The lady was pointing at me
!
Another figure, a boy holding a Jack-in-the-box, turning it slowly. I recognized the music-Music Box by the composer Philip Glass. I gasped. He walked to the man.
The man smiled and hugged him. He mouthed, "Goodbye" behind the boy's back.
The man appeared broken, his body disappearing into the smoke. I crawled backward a bit to avoid the large amount of smoke.
The boy sat in the man's rocking chair, rocking in big motions but going slowly. He played his music in sinc with his rocking. I could tell the song was coming to an end. The women came the the boy, and he grabbed her hand and kissed it.
"My lady." The boy said, the hint of his British accent begging to be heard. I could tell he was trying to hide it.
"Sire." The lady said back. Her British accent shown better than mine.
All at once, the music slowed to a stop, and then-
Silence. I saw it in front of me, all at once. Everything was gone. It had gone black. No one around, just the creak of the old rocking chair to break any thought that dared creep into my mind. I stared blankly into the darkness, my heart beating extremely loud.
"Wake up, Danika!" I shouted. She sat up, rubbed her eyes, and laid back down. "No! Get up!" I pushed her shoulder roughly.
"Stop! That hurts!" She screamed and rolled over, not once opening her eyes.
I hit her again, slightly harder this time. "I'm so sorry yo have to get up, baby. Now!" I clapped my hands together in a loud moment and it made her jump.
She groaned as she got out of bed. "What's for breakfast?" She said rather loudly.
