Author's Note

Escaping is the first book in the paranormal romance series, Dark Endeavours which consist of primely 3 books. Just so you know that the series is not mainly about werewolves though the first book concentrates more on the latter. Point of views will be alternated but mostly it will be from the female protagonist's.

Prologue

"As harrowing as it can be, death can also be an alternate way to one's freedom."

Some people irrevocably attach to that very conception, paramount importance. A paradoxal truth? I have always doubted it, yet people do not hesitate to end their supposedly miserable life on a sudden moodswing. Do they ever ask themselves whether it is ever worth the torment it will entail? Scarcely.

Of course, this rant coming from an escapist par excellence like myself is quite ironical, but then who cares? C'est la vie after all and agonising or not, it goes on...

Chapter One

Lore had it that every cloud had its silver lining, but I was seriously starting to think that this one notion was purely an aberration. It was no secret that my life was not a bed of roses; in fact it was more like an unpredictable roller-coaster, ceaselessly cornering me with ineluctable and unwanted events. Irrevocably I was karma’s long-term victim and my fate seemed to be sealed to stay as such.

One week had already elapsed since my arrival to this absolutely outlandish town that peculiarly reeked of murkiness and I despised it. I was now a stranger to my own life, perpetually haunted by that sole question, “How had it happened?”  The woman that had been by my side for so long was now gone, forsaking me in a world where I was doomed to feel like a black sheep but what mortified me was that I did not care, at all.

Deliberately glancing at the clock, I realised that it was time to get up and soon I found myself slipping into a pair of jeans and a plain white tee with my converse before sedately making my way to the kitchen where I was greeted with a view that two months ago I would have called utterly absurd.

A cruel joke? Absolutely. Justified? Not at all.

In dark jeans and his button-down shirt, Nathaniel Blake could even be called handsome in an old man kind-of-way with his manly facial traits, slightly greying hair and startling pair of green eyes that was presently scrutinising me with that glint of prolonged sadness. It was conspicuous that even though our parentage, we did not share any similar physical features, however his countenance mirrored mine so flawlessly, nestled in that crestfallen state over one harrowing loss. I hated him, it was irrevocable, but it was starting to sound like a mere façade, and that infuriated me. Who was he after all? The list was, of course, endless- from the worse father to a simple stranger- but now these too sounded like made-up lies and again came the ultimate question, “Why?”

Sitting beside Nathaniel was the woman he had supposedly married five years ago when settling in Black Vale, Emily, a beautiful woman in her early forties graced with a startling beauty and emitting warmth.

“Morning Iris,” she let out softly and cast me a smile, one that I never returned as my gaze trailed to Emily’s 17 year old son from her previous marriage, Noah Chandler. The gorgeous boy was unambiguously a younger male version of his mother, but unlike the latter, he had an awful attitude that I found absolutely loathsome. As he looked up, his cerulean blue eyes immediately narrowed at me into slits, amplifying the fact that he primly nurtured hostility towards me.

“Noah!” Emily scolded, granting her his glare.

“What? First you try to replace dad by some shitty dude and now you’re imposing on me his daughter? You know what? Fuck you all!” He seethed and barged out much to Emily’s dismay.

I merely sighed. It was his third outburst in barely one week and as much as I wanted to brush aside this whole turmoil, I could not. Today was my first school day and Noah was supposed to be my ride, but now he was gone and that meant either Nathaniel or Emily would have to be his surrogate.

I closed my eyes and tacitly willed it to be the latter.

Just like most mothers knew that they were bound to love their child, I knew that I was doomed to be unlucky. It was inexorable, it was awful and it fucking made me want to scream. Unfortunately though, that was not me.

The awkwardness that prevailed while Nathaniel drove me to school was nearly palpable but most of all, suffocating. No one dared to talk, our relationship was after all in a precarious state and therefore ginger steps were required, not that I really cared though.

The instant the car reached the destination, I was out of it in record time, satisfied that the sudden high school’s hubbub had completely drowned his “Have a good day.”

Immediately walking towards the school main building, I tried my best to evade the student’s inquisitive gazes. I had resoluted myself to not look up, and this unfortunately had been erroneous for once in the hall way, my whole body crashed into one hard wall which had arms, legs, a mop of unruly brown hair and storming obsidian eyes tinted with what we could call anger aimed at me.

“Watch where you’re going,” he said though gritted teeth before shoving me aside and walking away in a condescending manner.

It was irking but even though I had that itching want to start calling the douche by all those horrid names that rushed though my mind, one single thought struck me:

“Had there ever been such a gorgeous boy before?”
