Preface
So, this was how it felt like to be chased.
Your breath coming short.
Your lungs and body aching.
Your feet pounding as you race across the asphalt in desperation.
Wanting to scream but you can't.
Running like there's no time left, like your life depends on it.
Fearing something you do not even know...
Our father had told us nothing. He had simply found us a shelter for us to hide in, our mother was already there waiting for our arrival. All I knew was that there was someone, something out there wanting us all dead.
My father did a secret knock at the shelter door... no one answered... he waited a few more seconds before he rapped his knuckle against the door once more. Still, there was no answer.
"Sara?" My father called, he looked distressed. A five o’clock shadow masked his face, as his calloused hands began to clench and unclench in impatience. I had never known my father to act this way, he always seemed calm and clear minded. But now he jumped at the slightest sound, his deep brown eyes casting suspicious glances everywhere he saw life. "Sara?!" Frantically he called out once more, but still no one answered.
The freezing ice wind sliced viciously through our clothes, yet I stood still, unmoving. I glanced at my sister Elizabeth. Her pastel blue eyes filled with anxiety and fear of the unknown. My hand reached her shivering cold fingertips. I wrapped them around my warm embrace as I smiled tenderly at her, my countenance not matching my true terror.
A piercing scream rose from within the shelter’s doors. We froze; dread filling each of our hearts. "Sara!" My father’s voice was hoarse and frantic; he withdrew his shot gun from his holster, and pulled the steel like trigger. A bullet smashed itself against the metal knob and shattered a hole inside the entrance. The door swung open ominously, the moonlight streaming through the cracked boarded up window and onto a body lying motionless.
There, still and ever so pale, our mother lay. Deep cuts entering her translucent skin, her emerald eyes a sudden oblivion of horror in a pool of blood.
"Mommy!" Elizabeth withered scream had broken the trance of the dead.
Within the never ending darkness, a small chuckle rang out, and a man made his presence known. "William, William, William," murmured the man, shaking his head. "When will you ever learn?"
"You... Will ...Pay…" My father growled.
“No William... you will." The man looked up smiling, a cruel but charming snake like smile. His midnight colored hair concealing coal eyes. “Such a shame really, a waste of a perfectly good meal. Fine blood indeed, but none so exquisite as yours…” He trailed off, as he licked his thumb; his cold dark eyes boring into my own, a seductive insatiable smile over taking his handsome face. "Rose and Elizabeth, I presume."
I was drawn back; the look he had given me was inhuman. His dark eyes were smoldering me, captivating my body inside his alluring coldness. Liz hid behind me in terror, her eyes never meeting his own. I placed my arm around her comfortingly and raised a striking cold glare at him. His eyebrow furrowed at me questioningly, as he raised his foot to get a step closer. A tarnished gun reached inches from his face, the wielder was my father. His once gentle face was now that of an enraged angel seeking vengeance, his eyes with nothing but pure murderous intent. “Take a damn step closer… I dare you.” He hissed, his hand lingering on the trigger, desperately waiting to end this man’s life. The man smiled venomously, an unimaginable hunger piercing his eyes. His deadly aura suffocating the air around us… he seemed suddenly untouchable.
The man’s clad boot took another step haughtily, taking my father’s threat to the test. A gunshot sounded out. The ring was harsh and violent; it had broken through everything that I had once known about my father.
