As Sybil ran she saw the forest zoom past her. The rain felt cool and refreshing on her olive skin. She knew she would beat her brothers to the cave in time. Just as she reached the waterfall that was the entrance to the cave, she looked back and saw her three brothers running as fast as they could. As she stood there watching she thought what the heck, they never ran like before. That’s when she saw the soldier on the horse running after her bothers. Then it hit her, aristocrats. Her older brother by only one year ran to her side. He was about to tell her to get inside the cave, when five more soldiers came into view. Sybil and her brother, Eslie, hurried inside the cave. They watched as their older brother stumbled inside.
“ Where’s Connor ?,” asked Sybil.
“He’s-still-out there-he told me-to make-sure-you guys were- ok.” Reid replied in heavy breaths.
“We’re fine and you,?” stated Eslie.
" Fine, let's just sit down for a minute,. " Reid said as he sat down on the wet floor of the cave.
They huddled at the entrance of the cave and waited for their oldest brother to come into view. Just as they saw Connor reach the mouth of the cave, an arrow shot through the air and hit him in the back. As he fell Sybil started to call out to call out to him but, was cut off by Reid’s hand on her mouth. She turned to look at him. She saw him with his pointer finger over his mouth. She shook her head telling him that she understood. He then removed his hand from her face. They watched attentively as one of the soldiers dragged their unconscious brother to a wagon with a cage on it. It was filled with other captives. After her brother was put into the cage with the others, she heard one of the soldiers say,
“Search the surrounding area. We need to find the others.”
Through the down pour she saw a soldier around her age come to the entrance of the cave. He had shaggy black hair, and looked a bit taller than her He looked of importance. She believed this by the way he was suited and the way he carried himself. He looked as if he was a bit taller than Sybil. He was muscular but not buff. She thought his features were quite beautiful but, suddenly remembered he was an aristocrat. Then his electric blue eyes connected with Sybil’s hazel green ones. She thought no, please don’t as he started to open his mouth but, was cut off by another soldier who walked over to him. This soldier had short brown hair and looked older than the other. He was gruff and much taller too.
“So you see anything, Derek?” the older soldier asked in a voice much gruffer than Sybil expected it to be.
The soldier known as Derek looked back at the cave and, saw a girl with a pleading look on her face. She had her pointer finger over her closed lips. He then turned to his comrade and said,
“No Bane there’s nothing here, let’s go tell Marcus.”
They started to walk towards the soldier that had commanded them to go searching. Derek looked back towards the cave, then turned back to see what Bane was rambling on about.
“They probley didn’t get that far, heads towards the castle. We’ll send a search party later,” said a soldier from atop a horse. This was the same soldier that had commanded the others earlier. Sybil believed his name to be Marcus.
Sybil, Reid, and Eslie watched as the two soldiers, Derek and Bane, mounted their horses and started to lead the others away from the area and towards the direction the aristocrats’ castle was in. As the wagon with prisoners rode by Sybil softly whispered,
“I’ll get you back, Connor, I promise.”
As soon as Derek entered his quarters he slammed the door behind him. He ran his hand through his thick black hair. Why couldn’t he stop thinking about that girl? Who was she? Did she live in the village near the Black Forrest? Who were the men with her? Why did he just let her go? He needed answers. Maybe he could question the man they had captured, that was seen with her. Wait, he thought I know what I’m going to do. Derek then exited his room and headed for the stables. Once he was there he mounted his horse and, started the long journey to the Black Forest.
As Sybil walked towards the cave she clutched the satchel she was carrying. She looked around to make sure no one saw her enter the cave. Only her brothers and her close friend Tain knew of the cave. That’s why she believed it to be the perfect place to store her weapons. She knew it was only a matter of time before the aristocrat vampires either killed or turned her brother. If she hurried now she knew she could reach the aristocrats castle by noon tomorrow. While thinking about how she was going to rescue her brother she hid the satchel behind a rock that was near the entrance of the cave. Sybil then walked further into the cave to a spring to fill her canister with water. When it was full she set it on the floor of the cave next to her. She the cupped her hand and ran it under the flow of the water. Next she ran her hand through her short chin-length mahogany hair. Suddenly she heard a noise. She looked around but saw nothing but the spring. Little did she know that she was being watched.
Derek thought to himself that was stupid. How could he have let his foot slip like that he knew he needed to be a lot more careful. He stood behind a huge stalactite, studying the girl attentively. Unlike most girls he had seen she wore pirate cut jeans and a shirt instead of a dress. The girl was pretty just as he had remembered her. Tall, slender, and those remarkable eyes, he could just stare into them all night. He slowly crept towards her and grabbed her from behind covering her mouth.
Sybil thrashed as her captor tried to block the blows she was making towards him. Finally they fell against the damp wall of the cave. Her captor pinned her to the wall, she looked directly into his electric blue eyes. It was the soldier from the evening before. Her heart started to race, she began to thrash more.
“Will you quit moving? I’m not here to hurt you,” Derek said pinning her to the wall again. The girl started to calm but he could feel her heart beat race. In a calm voice he said,
“I’m going to uncover your mouth now, promise you won’t scream, I’m not going to hurt you.”
Sybil shook her head, she thought what does he want with me? Derek slowly took his hand off her mouth. What came next he did not expect. The girl took a knife from her boot and stabbed him in the side. Derek grasped his side. As he fell his world went dark. Derek slowly opened his eyes. He looked around him and saw darkness except for the glow of a nearby fire. He then looked down and noticed his shirt and armor had been removed and his wound dressed. Derek started to sit up but stopped when he heard someone say,
“Slowly, it won’t hurt as much,”
He looked in the direction he heard the voice come from. There sat the girl from earlier. Sybil slowly approached the aristocrat, and knelt down beside him. She started to undressed his bloody bandage, but was supposed by his hand on hers.
“What are you doing,” he asked.
“Just be still, please,” she said. As she unwrapped his bandage she noticed he was studying her.
“How long was I out?,” Derek asked.
“Two days," Sybil replied.
Derek realized he was still hurt as he saw her take off the last bit of his bandage. Why am I still hurt? I should’ve healed by now, he thought. That’s when he noticed the girl had left his side. Sybil soon returned to the boy with fresh cloth and her canister full of water. She watched as he winced in pain as she cleaned the wound.
“Sorry,” she said as she applied a paste of mint leaves, grass, mosses and water to his injury.
“It’s ok. My name is Derek. What’s yours?” He asked.
“Why should I tell you? What so when you heal you can hunt me down and kill me?” She replied.
“No, so I can thank you,” He said rather gruffly.
“Whatever,” Sybil said rolling her eyes. Derek winced as she tied the bandage. Derek wondered what her deal was.
“Why would I hunt you down and kill you? You’ve done nothing to me, well except stab me, but other than that nothing?” He asked.
“Because that’s what your kind does, they hunt, kill, or worse make people their slaves,” She said rather bluntly.
“Whoa, wait, My people? What’s that supposed to mean? An if you hate “My people” so much then why are you helping me,” He asked.
"Look I don’t know, ok! I’ve got to go, it would be wise if you left as soon as you are able,” she said. As Sybil reached the entrance of the cave she let out a sigh and turned and said,
“My name is Sybil.”
