Studying the agents carefully, I ensured that they were trustworthy. All three of them had incidents in their past that caused them to join the law enforcement. Each of them wanted to understand but knew they could only understand up to a certain extent. They all wanted to be trusted by Emberlynn, Kaire, and me.
“There’s something you probably should know, about her,” Emberlynn said. Agents Earl and Vuniga were already waiting in the car while Sullivan was cleaning up the equipment. She was nervous, but that was only because I was infected. The infection made the entire team of agents apprehensive. “Millennia can read minds.” Sullivan stared at Emberlynn, wanting to see if she was just messing with her, but knowing it was true. I simply nodded. To Emberlynn, it looked as if I had done it for no reason but it was in reply to Sullivan. She had a thought that needed a yes or no answer, and I gave it to her. Hopefully she saw my actions.
The three agents were gone almost as soon as they had arrived. It seemed as if they had been at the house for an eternity. Especially when the gun was pointed at me and I could feel the cold metal of the barrel. Time felt as if it had slowed down and sped up when I took action. It did not feel right being threatened, almost as if she had been threatening my pack. Was that how it felt to be an alpha? Did Zeke go through the same thing? Was I becoming my own alpha? In the end, I settled with peripheral. Wolves that lingered at the edge of pack boundaries were known as peripherals.
Boredom slowly creeped over me as I sat on the couch, waiting for the day to be over. The television sounded interesting, but it would not satisfy me. Hunting deer could be a possibility, but that meant going outside and shifting in broad daylight. Humans sure did get bored really fast. If only there was something for me to do in this lonesome house.
Turning on the TV, I sat there watching the images dance across the screen. They were moving soundlessly. As I studied the remote, I figured out why they were so quiet. The volume was off. Once there was sound, it made the TV show much more interesting. However, I still did not pick up on one single thing that occurred in the episode. Everything was so complicated, it was probably an episode that was made later in the series. That was when I went to a last resort, channel surfing. So many shows were so far in their series it was insane. Giving up, I shut the television off. Books littered Emberlynns room, none of them fictional. They all seemed focused on diseases, both lethal and temporary. Picking one up, I was surpirsed how much I understood the material. Entirely, the information seem more than necessary for a rogue lycan to discover a bio-wepaon. Sure the lycan virus shared a few symptoms with other diseases such as tuberculosis and toxic shock syndrome and even a couple prion based diseases. Maybe there was a connection between it all. Even then, lycans were pretty clever and most could get really scientific with the diseases. They could end the world in a heartbeat if they were connecting dots like I was. Over time however, I ran out of dots to connect. All of Emberlynn's books had been read.
Plopping myself onto my bed, I stared at the ceiling, overlooking my day. It started out with confusion, went to boredom. After that it graduated to anger and some weird nameless feeling, and then once more it fell back to boredom. I was getting hungry, but not for regular food. I desired something else. As my thoughts ran on, my eyes fluttered until I reached a much needed sleep.
The Full Moon
Sprinting, I could feel the bare earth underneath my feet. Without any shoes, the ground was rubbing against my foot, turning it raw. I had a destination in mind, and nothing would stop me from getting there. If only the ground wasn’t so harsh. Picking up my speed, I could make out the outline of a wolf. It was alone, and that was not good. I slowed down so that I would not run into the lone creature. Crouching, I knew he could smell me in my entirety. The half human half wolf smell that burns your nose. All wolves smelled lycans like that. It was how I detected Hamilton. However, this wolf was not reacting to my stench. Something was not right with this wolf. It was possible he was too used to the smell and to him I smelled like one of his friends. If that was the case, then where are his friends.
The wolf spun around suddenly. I recognized him just as I had backed away. Kaire had been sitting alone in the forest for no reason. He had not warned me that he was in forest, but here he is.
“What are you doing Kaire?” I asked, knowing that I could keep it in my mind. “Kaire? Are you okay?” He just sat there. Nothing was said or thought. What was wrong with my brother?
Get up Millennia.
I sprung upwards, knocking Kaire off the bed. Nothing could scare me more than him talking to me while I was sleeping. At least the creepy dream was done. I could only hope that it would never happen in reality like dreams sometimes did to other humans.
Dusk had fallen, and something felt off. Something was missing from the house. Standing up, I sniffed the air carefully. Being unable to reach a conclusion, I walked out of my room. Nothing was out of place. Everything was exactly how I left it before I fell asleep. What was missing?
Maybe if you would let me tell you then you’d know!
I had completely ignored Kaire. My own sense were telling me to search the house, looking for whatever was missing.
Shut up for a few seconds and let me explain!
Keeping my mind silent, I waited for Kaire to answer me. I had a strong desire to know exactly why something felt off about the house. That was when a strange smell hit me. The smell resembled maple syrup and pine. Like a forest, almost like the one that was behind the house, but it held that familiar and home-like aroma to it.
Emberlynn never came home. Usually she is back by dark, but she still is not here. Millennia, are you listening?
Yeah, I heard you.
Standing up, I looked over the house. Whoever took Emberlynn knew what they were doing and knew that Kaire and me were here. They were targeting me. I knew exactly who took her.
When I opened the door, Agent Sullivan stood on the other side. It was as if she had been waiting for me. Then again, she was sweating and her mind said that she had been running for quite awhile before reaching the house. She did not know about Emberlynn’s disappearance, but she was here for another reason, and it involved Kaire and me.
The three of us sat down in the kitchen. Sullivan was digging through paper files while Kaire and I stared at her. We both were studying her while she studied her files. My guess, she knew why I was alive when I should be dead. Just as I was about to read her mind, she began to explain.
“First of all, you are going to need to know something before I explain your parents. A whole bunch of wolf breeds could once be converted into a lycan by being bitten. Those same breeds were wiped out to protect the human race. Scientists have numerous times brought it up when they talk about you two.” Her voice bugged me. She seemed to know this off the top of her head. “Both of your parents were once in captivity. I tracked them down to see why you two were the only ones born instead of an entire litter and I came across this,” she noted as she handed me a sheet of paper. “Your mom was a Kenai Peninsula wolf while your father was a dire wolf. Both breeds had been known to be extinct until then. Scientists wanted to see what would happen if the two breeds crossed. They thought you two were regular grey wolves that your mom found. When they learned that she knew what would happen if she brought her pups right up to them, they went searching. They still haven’t found you.” That was some harsh information to take in. “Scientists did not know much about either breeds. When they learned about you two, they figured out that both breeds had high intelligence. That explains a lot of your behavior. Millennia, scientists predicted that if a wolf were to survive, they would have a hard time learning the English language. However, you adjusted quickly. I am sure Kaire would have done the same if he were infected.”
“How did you get this? From what I know this is highly classified information.” I replied. Sullivan laughed.
“I may lose my job over this file. I may or may not have stolen it,” she answered. Sullivan would not only lose her job, she would be arrested for stealing. Even I knew that. (Mainly from watching a little too much TV)
We just sat there. There were so many options but none of them seemed to end happily. If we went to the scientists, both Kaire and me would turn into lab rats. Going to Hamilton would only get everyone killed, but he had Emberlynn. Not even the government could help us. They would arrest Sullivan who was helping us avoid a bad situation. We had to do something, but there was no easy way out.
Coming up with a plan was not easy. Although I had one, I knew that someone was going to die in the end. That was why I was the only one who was going to go to Hamilton and get Emberlynn back. Sullivan and Kaire would wait back at the house for me. If anything happened to me and they knew about it, they would get as far away from the forest as they could. Lycans were careful not to expose themselves, especially since the city was alive, even at night. There was one problem to begin with. I was going to have to wait. Just in case the infection reached the city, I would wait until the full moon. Humans are pushed into
