"The president gave you an invitation?"
I nodded.
"Well congratulations. This is a very big honor, especially for a minor."
"I guess..."
"You guess? This is good, Audrey, it's a step closer to a good postition in the government."
"Yeah..."
I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about this whole situation. Part of me wanted to be happy that I might one day be a queen, though part of me wanted to slap the president, and the queen, and whoever else, for coming up with this idea, and part of me wanted to scream to the top of my lungs. Though the latter two would probably get me in some trouble, so I stuck with the first one, for now.
A Great Day.
"Where the hell did you go on friday?"
I sighed into my locker before turning around to face Dawn.
"Um, I forgot, my dad was having some co-workers over for dinner at around 8:30, and he wanted me home by seven. Long story short, I barely made it," I replied.
"Well, would it have killed ya to say goodnight?" she asked as she opened the locker to my right.
"Sorry about that."
I looked into the little mirror on the side of my locker and pulled back all of my auburn strands, except for my shaggy bangs that always cover my face, and tied them into a bun. It was the beginning of April and it was finally starting to get warm here in Oregon. I grabbed my english book and swung my backpack over my shoulder. I watched Dawn, on the other hand, take her ponytail out, letting her raven-black hair drape over her shoulders, and unclip her own shaggy bangs, which also fell upon her face stopping just above her bright green eyes.
She grabbed her english book, too, and we headed to first period. We got in our seats just before the bell rang.
Our teacher, Mr. Johnson, stood from his desk and beamed at us, "Good morning, class! How was everyone's weekend?"
The class Simutaneously groaned. "We won the game on friday! Play-offs, baby!" yelled Chris, the dark-skinned quarterback of the football team who, despite the warm weather, was wearing his black and green school jacket. A couple of the other students cheered after him.
"Alright, alright, settle down now," said Mr. Johnson, "and congratulations to the football team. Now, before we begin, we will be having a couple of new students joining us today, they should be arriving any second now. As I do expect you all to give them a big Bridgestone-Bears welcome, I also ask that you all treat them nicely and are undisrupted from today's lesson. In other words, everyone is to be on their best behaivior."
"Where are they from?" the blonde girl behind me asked.
"One is from Michigan, the other I'm not quite sure," Mr. Johnson replied.
"Who are they?" asked someone else.
"I don't know their names, though I know the girl is from Michigan and the other is a boy."
One of the ladies from the front office stepped in and Mr. Johnson went to talk to her just out the door. After a moment he entered the class, followed by the two new students.
He cleared his throat, "Class, this is Ashley," he motioned toward a tall, slim girl with blond hair that went to her stomach, wearing a pink lacey dress and fake flowers in her hair.
"You may take a seat," he pointed to an empty desk in the front. "And this," he stepped to the right, "is David," he motioned to...
Oh no. Oh God, no. David Carlile.
"You may also take a seat," Mr. Johnson said, pointing to the only empty seat left in the whole class. Lucky me, David was sitting to my left.
Throughout the whole lesson I didn't so much as glance anywhere other than Mr. Johnson, the board, or my my notes. However, the whole time I could feel the burn of someones eyes on me. I didn't even have to wonder who's eyes they were.
We were all getting a head-start on the homework when the lady from the office came back to speak to Mr. Johnson again. She left just before the bell rang. I got up, however my hopes to leave the class without another thought of David were completely crushed.
" Ms. Greene and Mr. Carlile please stay for a moment. Ms. Harris and Ms. Davison, you, too, please."
I slumped back into my desk.
"Ms. Greene, Ms. Davison, come here please."
They talked quietly, though I didn't bother paying attention. I glared at the floor. I could feel his stare burning into the back of my head.
"Thank you," Mr. Johnson said a bit louder, handing Gina a paper. Ashley and Gina left the class, Gina saying something about how harsh our chemistry teacher was.
"Now you two," he motioned for us to come closer with a grin on his face.
"Mrs. Meyer, the secretary, asked if there were any students who could show the new students around. Well, Ms. Harris, I thought you and Ms. Davison would be perfect for the job. And since everyone here has pretty much all their class together it shouldn't be a problem, now should it?"
"No, sir," I said looking at his desk.
"Good. Now, neither of you have to go to any of your classes for the rest of the day. Instead, Ms. Harris, you'll be giving Mr. Carlile a grand tour of Bridgestone High. Make sure it's thurough and tell him anything he might need to know to get trough the rest of this semester, alright?"
"Of course," I said with the biggest, fakest smile I could manage.
"Great! Mr. Carlile, I've seen your schedule and it looks as though you have quite a few AP classes, just as everyone else here, including Ms. Harris. Because of this, I know you're very smart, I also expect you are very mature. I know you two might not know eachother, however I ask you be respectful to Ms. Harris."
"Actually," David began, looking at me, "we do know eachother."
"You do?" Mr. Johnson looked at me cheerfully.
"We were neighbors when we were kids," I said, glancing at David, then back at Mr. Johnson.
"Well, even better! There should be no problems here, then?"
"Absolutely not, sir," David answered with a grin.
"Fantastic! Here," Mr. Johnson said, handing me a pass,"if anyone asks what you're up to, show them this and tell them you're giving Mr. Carlile a tour."
"Okay," I replied with a nod.
"Thank you. Have fun." He smiled. We smiled back and I lead David out of the classroom.
Like Mr. Johnson said, fantastic. This was just fantastic.
The bell rang for second period and we stood there as the hallway cleared out.
"Well, Mr. Carlile, where do you want to begin?"
"Well, Ms. Harris, you're the one giving the tour, you decide."
I sighed. I put the paper in my pocket and gripped onto the strap of my backpack.
"Well, lets start with your classes. Let me see your schedule."
"I have exactly the same classes as you," he stated.
"How do you know that?"
"I can read minds, remember?" He smirked.
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, smart-ass." I turned and began walking down the hallway.
"Well, that was obviously first period; AP English, room 205 with Mr. Johnson," I said, pointing behind me,"Second period is AP Calculus; room 407 with Ms. Beatly." He followed me down the hallways until we reached our sixth period class with about ten more minutes of second period left.
