Beginning and End
Every time I looked down to my best friend from heaven, the corner of my lips would lift into a smile. Ten years of solitude had strengthened her and she was no longer the naïve girl of seventeen. She was a woman now; a woman that now knew the importance of enjoying life and living in the moment. Today was my beginning and my end. As usual, she would bring a bouquet of flowers to my grave and whisper the words, “Happy Birthday”. As she gazed up at the moon, it was as if she were here with me too.
She Knew
She knew she shouldn’t go.
From the very beginning, she knew she shouldn’t have led him on. She was happy with her boyfriend of three years. They were the perfect match, the couple everyone envied.
One summer, he showed up, and everything changed.
The vibrate of her phone broke off her contemplation. Are you coming?
She let the tears roll down her cheek and her heart pounded erratically against her chest as flashes of memories engulfed her.
In what seemed like forever, she clicked off the text, dropped her keys, and flopped into couch.
Because she knew she shouldn’t go.
Setting Him Free
I watched him say the two words that broke my heart into a million pieces. When the minister announced them husband and wife, I knew the long rivalry with the woman standing at the alter was over. She had won.
The bride and groom waved at the standing ovation and kissed again. I swallowed the lump in my throat and applauded, not wanting to seem like the spiteful ex-girlfriend who was still clinging to the past. When the groom met my gaze, I smiled when I found his eyes reflecting bliss and pride.
I loved him enough to let go.
