“Little Lizzie had an axe. She gave her mother forty whacks. When she saw what she’d done, she gave her father forty-one.” That plays over and over in Liesel Birton’s, aka Maybelle Sawyer’s, head. Being only ten when she killed her mother and almost killing her father, she has never had a normal life.
Maybelle Sawyer was originally born as Liesel Birton. She was a beautiful child. Long, curly bleach blond hair and icy blue eyes; she was her parents pride and joy. Maybelle still has all of her features as she did as a child, but no one recognizes her.
It was a very bright day. Liesel was outside swinging after school when her mother, Cindy, called her inside for a snack. Being around 3 o’clock in the afternoon, Liesel was hungry. Cindy had prepared a peanut-butter and jelly with a banana just how she knew her daughter loved it. Liesel went back outside and was still out there for another few hours playing with her dolls. She didn’t notice her father, and that he was already home from the bar.
Being in a drunken stupor, Randall Birton called for his wife. Cindy doesn’t know how he will react when she asks him to sign the divorce papers. She comes into the bedroom and he has her papers in his hands. Red eyes and faced, he asks her what these are for. She didn’t respond because it was plainly stated what those papers were on the front page in bold print.
Liesel had just gotten back in when she heard yelling coming from her parents’ room. She got really scared when things started to shatter. Her mother ran out of the room, but her father was hot on her trail. Randall slammed Cindy against the wall and pinned her there. Screams came frantic from her mouth. Liesel went into the study and grabbed the gun that her mother had bought when her husband’s drinking got worse. Cindy told her if something bad happened to get it and bring it to mommy.
Randall saw the gun and got angrier. He pulled his knife from his trousers and held it at Cindy’s throat. Liesel shakily held the gun, pointing it straight at her father.
“Let her GO! Let her go NOW!” Liesel screamed and demanded. But being the sarcastic meany-head that Randall is, he threw Cindy at her.
The impact made the hair trigger go off, killing her mother instantly. Liesel emptied the gun on her father when he came lunging toward her. She called 911 to get help for her mother.
EMS was too late. Cindy Grace Birton was dead. Randall Birton was unconscious, but alive. Liesel was in shock. She just killed her mother and almost killed her father. What will become of her? She has nowhere to go. And she just might be accused of murder.
