“Awww I’m too little to do anything!” little Hank cried. He watched his Dad drive away, leaving him behind.
His Mama wiped his tears with her apron, “That’s not true Hank, you can do a lot of things.”
Hank’s little, tear-stained, red face peered up at his Mama, “Like what?”
She smiled as she ran her finger along his bottom lip he had stuck out so much further than the top one. “Well, do you remember when Mrs. Mahoney lost her dog and you found him?”
Hank shook his head up and down. He had stopped crying and was listening intently.
“How about the time MaryAnn Walters was lost in the woods for two days, who told us where she could be found?”
“I did, Mama...” little Hank said soberly.
“All the things your Dad and I lose, you know right where they are, don’t you?” Hank’s Mom reached out and pulled him close.
“I see them and I just know.” Hank tried to explain.
“I know, baby, and that’s good.” His Mom patted his back lightly. The two of them sat on the front porch of the house that little Hank was born in. Her son Hank had a special ability to find things. Hank was an innocent little boy and it was a close call with the Walter’s girl. There had been talk that he had led her into the woods to left her is why he knew where she was. She hoped one day he would find a use for his “talent” that no one could misconstrue as harmful.
Hank grew up trying to hide what he knew. It was clear to him, after a while people thought he was odd. He was shunned by most of his peers. When people lost things, he merely gave suggestions as to where they might be. He felt like an outsider but he still always wanted to help.
When he finished high school we wanted to serve his country and entered into the military. It was here he found his life’s calling. As an infantry man, he quickly became squad leader because of his incredible ability to choose the right path though a mine field.
Hank was responsible for saving the life of many a soldier with his intuitive skills. He could “see” snipers long before they were a threat. No one questioned how he could do this. They were glad to have Hank with them. He received quite a few medals and promotions in his career.
Nothing was more satisfying to Hank than the day he saw Lorie walk into the mess hall. At last he found something that meant something to him personally. He walked right up to her and said, “You don’t know me, but I think I’ve found what I’ve been lookin’ for!”
