Chapter One.

She ran down her gravel driveway toward the freeway. Hot tears tickled down her flushed cheeks. Her long hair flew behind her. “How could the world be so cruel for a teenager?” The rocks underneath her thin shoes pierced through her feet. She raced forward, ignoring the pain,. flashes of his fist punching the glass of her bedroom window sunk into her mind. Freedom was only a few miles away: the nearest barn. It was a small, run down place, but anything was better then being here. A small smile crept on her face. It faded when the bustle of highway car lights flashed by. Stopped in her tracks she closed her eyes slowly and opened them looking behind her and her farm house. There was no going back. Tears filled her vision. She blinked them out of her sight and turned back to the freeway. Holding her breath she counted to eight her lucky number, and making a mad dash between cars. Horns blasting, people yelling, and her own heavy breaths filled her ears. Ignoring the surroundings she made it to the other side, where the woods were. The trees were full of orange, red, and green leaves turning brown. It was the beginning of fall, when the cold breezes started to come in from the north. The navy sweater that hung over her shoulder clung to her thin body as a gust of wind swept by.
“They said life wasn’t easy, but life isn’t suppose to be this hard.”
She spoke in a soft panting voice that was only heard to the crickets of the night. A near by fallen tree caught Sage’s eye she made a running leap over it and treaded threw the dark woods, with only the moon light showing her the way and her heart guiding her. The night’s rustling, the owl’s hoots didn’t scare her or even faze her. She stopped to catch
her breath by a near by clearing. Looking down at her hands they were stained with dry blood from her lip. The cuts and bruises would heal, but the scars on her heart would forever live. To her it felt like the world stopped spinning for that one moment she ran across the road making the choice to never go back. It was all behind her now, Sage kept reminding herself. The rest of the way to the barn seemed it drug on forever. The up hill, down hill, dodging of oak trees had already made her whole body sore. The adrenalin that once rushed threw her veins had now left her weak and shaken from the memories.
