Doomed, Tyler McCormick [rooftoppers TXT] 📗

The year is 2066 and in the eyes and mind of Adam, a typical rocking 17 year old, the world would come to an end with the invasion of zombies or a plague wiping out the population. He never in his last five years of debating the destruction thought of it ending the way it did. He never foresaw the earth being destroyed by a massive series of solar storms that drained the oceans and the massive universal winds that ripped the trees and plants out by their very roots. The winds took everything out of the world that he held dear, well all but the woman of his dreams.
He managed to find an underground cavern to house his family and the girl of his dreams. Her name was Bethany and he stated to her and his parents numerous times that she was the most gorgeous girl he had ever seen. They had been neighbors just two months before the sirens blared that the storms were coming. Adam knew where the cavern was due to the fact he had snuck out numerous times and sat there for hours just thinking.
The night before the storm he had a dream that involved him, Bethany and his parents in that very cavern but he couldn’t quite place a finger on it until he found them all in the cavern. The facts still struck him as odd, but he knew they all made sense. The studies of the solar system coming to an outrageous storm had been predicted for over forty years and the scientists behind the studies states that it was due to the amount of emissions from the rocket fuel that had caused the sudden spot where the storm emerged from. Following the statements from the scientists through the news, Adam had subconsciously begun looking for some place to hide when it struck.
“Adam how did you where this place was and how to get in this exact location as quickly as we did?” his mother asked once the winds had died down enough to where they could hear each other’s quick, panicking breaths.
“Umm. . . .” Adam stammered as he thought how to explain this. “I had been sneaking out at night because I couldn’t sleep and the evening air always calmed me.” He stated finally.
“Well I am disappointed in you for having snuck out but I am glad that you knew some place safe for us to go.” His mother said with a frustrated but understanding voice.
The family had managed to have flash lights still in the car from their last camping trip. The lights made it possible for the four of them to see the walls and everything for them to be able to navigate easily. They walked for hours following the winding paths and ducking down under certain ceiling points. As the time carried on they found that they were growing tired and decided to stop and rest for a few hours before trying to find another way out to find if the surface is survivable.
Adam found himself on the ground away from the rest of the group but he had his eyes on Bethany the entire time until he finally fell asleep. Once he drifted into his soundless slumber he found himself wondering the surface and finding that it hadn’t been as bad as they had remembered and that it was habitable. The trees had already begun to grow back in some places and the suspected storm clouds actually full of rain that began to drizzle over him and water the newly growing plants.
Adam walked through the new surface and the fresh rain for what seemed to be hours when he suddenly found himself at the edge of a cliff watching the solar winds blowing the sands back toward him and ripping through the new trees. He soon found that no matter how fast he tried to run, it was almost impossible to get out of the path, when it eventually wrapped him up and tore the flesh from his muscles, gradually tearing those away down to his bones. He barely heard his own scream before he woke from the dream in a cold sweat inside the cavern. His eyes had taken a minute to adjust enough for him to faintly see the rest of the group still sleeping. He deiced to take a small walk and found that the path before them split and he followed the one that led to the right. It went on for about an hour before he found the exit. He looked out of the exiting cavern and found that it was a bright shining, hot environment on the new surface.
After the shock of what he found that surface looked like, Adam soon found himself wondering around on the burnt dirt that kept sending ashes up and into his breathing and causing him to cough horribly. He found that not a living thing could be seen in eyesight and decided to return to the cavern and be with the group that he had saved. As he entered into the cavern he decided to lead the group down the path that he didn’t follow and hope that it leads them to a different location. He found that the group had just awoken to his missing and were all conversing as to where he could have disappeared to.
“Where have you been young man?!” his mother demanded. “We thought that you woke and lost your way back to us.”
“I woke to take a piss mother, relax.” Adam replied in a sarcastic tone.
“Well please don’t do it again. You are the reason that we are alive and we would hate to lose you now.” Bethany said in a soft voice while looking at him with teary eyes.
“Well I’m back and I’m not going anywhere else. I promise.” Adam said with a grin.
Adam led his parents and Bethany down the path to the left that he doesn’t know to where it goes. They continued to follow the winding path hoping that it would eventually lead to a place that they can rest and find food. The parents kept complaining that they shouldn’t be there and they needed to find a way out. Adam just kept making mocking faces because he was used to them complaining over the smallest things.
They finally reached a point that they no longer needed the flashlights due to there seemed to a strange glow the emanated from ahead of them. They continued walking and soon found that the glow was from an exit that they hoped would be there. The exit seemed to have a green light emitting from it. They hoped that it was a place of green grass and lushes that were beyond their dreams. As they walked closer to the exit they found that it was just the green color of the stone that made the light green. They found there were no grasses and plants, no watering hole that they could drink form and that all life on earth was dead except for them, of course. The parents soon found that without the essential necessities there was no reason to try and continue, but Bethany and Adam stuck close together and were determined to find a way to live.
Adam’s parents sat on a stone weeping that there was no hope and they would die there. Adam continue to walk on with Bethany’s hand in his, determined that there was a place full of food and water that they could live on. Adam took one last glance back at his parents and thought that he had to move on sometime but it sucked it had to be like this. He turned back and kept walking, thinking of what to do next.
“What are we going to do Adam?” Bethany asked with a hint of concern in her voice.
“I’m not sure yet. We need to continue walking and hope that there is a place that was unaffected by the storms.” Adam replied with a glint of hope in his voice.
“Well I hope there is such a place because I have really liked you for a long time. With this event, it has given me the chance to actually get to know you and be with you.” Bethany said with a smile on her face.
“I have liked you ever since you moved in those two months ago. It’s sad that it was this event that allowed us to get this close.” He said as he pulled her into his arms.
After holding each other in the middle of this dead planet and the horrible condition that it resided in, they continued on their long and heated walk to find a place of shelter and peace. They walked for hours, till they noticed it was becoming dusk and Adam decided that they should use the dead tree branches and logs to build them a temporary shelter for the night and they will go further again in the morning.
Adam managed to put together a small shelter that had two rooms; one for him, another for her and they told each other good night before they resided to their respected rooms.
While they slept, a strange noise awoke Adam and he recognized the noise as a small animal. He quickly found a small stick that a fairly decent point to it and walked out of the shelter quietly, as to not wake Bethany. As he walked, he saw that the moon glowing brightly, made it possible to follow the tracks. He quietly trekked behind the animal, hoping to not make a sound to alert it. He found it that the animal he was following was a small white and black spotted rabbit that had managed to keep itself safe in a burrow under the ground out of the winds.
Slowly stalking behind this marvelously colored creature, he raised the stick above his head and used all the force within his arm and torso, and launched the spear as hard as he could. The rabbit had just enough time to hear the object ripping through the air before it struck and killed him. Pleased with the kill that he just made, Adam ran to the now laying corpse, removed the spear and carried the rabbit back to the shelter by its hindquarters. After arriving back to the shelter, Adam searched for two pieces of wood that we the same width and length to use in the making of his fire.
He rubbed the two pieces together quickly, remembering how to make a fire from his time in boy scouts; and the fire arose to his great surprise. He then tracked down a relatively small stick to pass through the rabbit’s corpse before her place it over the fire and waking Bethany. After he ravished the rabbit onto the stick to cook it he walked into the hut and gently woke Bethany.
“Huh? It’s not morning yet, why are you waking me up?” Bethany groaned through half shut eyes and grogginess.
“Bethany, there is life still on the planet. A rabbit running past our hut woke me up and I hunted it down.” Adam said with extreme joy in his voice for having found food.”It’s on a skewer that I’m about to cook it with. We are going to have food for the first time in two days.”
“Well if is good than I will eat it otherwise I’m waiting till we find some berries or something else for me to eat.” Bethany stated.
