He looked up at his father. “father” he asked. “Why do they all stare at me.”
His father replied in a soft tone “Because you Mona, are special.”
Just then Mona heard screaming and the thump of footsteps on the iced bridge.
“JAMES WERE COMING,”He heard someone yell behind them with a voice that didn’t sound all human “FOR YOU AND THE KID.” Mona was scared now. He turned to his father
“Father what’s happening,”
“Mona you need to go, now,” His father said with a growing sense of urgency.
“I won’t leave you,” Mona cried out suddenly fully aware that he might never see his father again. Just then, he was picked up and realized he was in Rins arms running away from whoever, or whatever was coming. Something then dawned on him, his father was gone.

“ ughhh” he awoke to the usual sound of banging pans that meant penny was up and ready for action, coming from downstairs. He sat up and put on some black jeans and a t-shirt, typical black on black that summed up Mona.Black was also the one color Mona thought he could relate to, dark and full of an empty nothingness. He had silver hair and piercing blue eyes. He slipped downstairs and silently sat down at the table, and picked up the newspaper.
“ JESUS,” penny turned around to see Mona seated directly behind her, “make some noise when you come in will you Mona.” Penny was a tall thin woman in her early twenties. She had been taking care of Mona since his father’s disapearance. Even though it had been a tremendous shock, mona never mentioned it willingly. He preferred to pretend it was irrelevant, but penny could tell he had never really gotten over it.
“Oh I’m sorry penny, I gave you quiet a scare didn’t I,” he laughed as she glared at his back. Mona tensed as hitoshi walked downstairs. Mona didn’t hate hitoshi, but he didn’t like him either, like Mona, hitoshi’s parents had gone missing along with all his siblings. They both had much in common but preferred to avoid each other whenever possible.
“Mona, good morning,” Hitoshi said barely moving his lips.
“Morning,” Mona replied in the same tone. Mona watched as Hitoshi effortlessly glided across the room to where his backpack and shoes were.
“Going out again Hitoshi,” Penny asked.
“I have business to address,” Hitoshi replied
“At this hour?” Penny asked annoyance sounding in her voice “You leave earlier every morning, at least stay and have some food.”
“Ill get something along the way.”
“Dammit, hitoshi your gonna get yourself sick living the way you do,” She said fuming
“I can live however I choose, your not my mother Penny!” He yelled and ran out the door slamming it shut. Mona watched him run to the far end of the village until he couldn’t see him anymore.
“I swear, hes almost a full grown man yet he acts like a child,” Penny said talking to no one in particular.
“He acts like it but believe me he takes care of himself more than you know,” Mona said trying to smooth over pennys outraged mood. He continued eating as if nothing was wrong.
“Oh, I almost forgot,” Penny said “I have to go into the next town over and do some shopping,”
“Well ok im just gonna stay here maybe get a little more sleep,”
“Still not sleeping are you, Is it the dreams again?”
“No,” Mona lied “I guess I just have some things on my mind.”
“Well if you even need to let it out im always here.” Penny said
“Sounds nice thanks.”
“Well I better get that shopping done, it looks like it might rain soon.”
“Alright ill hold up fort.”
“Sounds good, and try to get some rest.”
“Alright,” Mona watched as penny left.

Mona finished eating and started up the stairs to his room. Being honestly tired and feeling a bit strange. He climbed into his soft, warm bed feeling completely exhausted even though he had woken up only hours before.
Mona laid there staring out the skylight at the center of his ceiling.
“Hmm,” he muttered to himself. He started thinking about his father , Mona couldn’t even remember what he looked like anymore. It was like whenever he tried to remember him a dark cloud washed over his mind threatening to erase him completely.
He wondered why that was, it annoyed him that he couldn’t remember what happened that night. The night his father disappeared from his life. After thinking it over unsuccessfully, he fell into a long deep sleep.
. . .
He was running. He couldn’t see who was chasing him or where he was going. He knew whoever was chasing him wasn’t going to let up until victorious. Suddenly he saw a light at the end of what appeared to be a tunnel he was running through. Just then a figure stepped into the light, and as he ran farther he started to be able to make out who it was. It was his father, he started running faster and harder trying to get to him. He wanted to hug him, to hear his father say his name. He finally reached the end of the tunnel, his father muttered something he could barely hear. 16 Mona. Then he disappeared, gone from the bright white light. His father being only inches away was gone.
. . .
Mona woke up breathing heavily, covered in sweat, and crying. He wanted his father to be here right now. He wanted his father to still be alive. His father had never been reported dead just missing for the last ten years. He thought about what his father had said to him in the dream, sixteen. Hmm that was only a few days away, his sixteenth birthday. He just laid back and tried to resume sleeping until he heard the ever so loud penny coming in.
“Monaaaa,” Penny yelled up to his room “I need some help with the bags.”
“Coming Penny,” Mona yelled back slightly annoyed he couldn’t sleep some more. So he walked down the stairs to where he found penny with an armful of grocery bags standing in the doorway.
“Some help Mona would be nice,” Penny said
“Sure,” Mona plastered on a fake smile and took some of the bags from penny. He set them on the counter, and began taking things out and gently placing them in the cupboards. His thoughts quickly wandered to the dream. He had been having the same dream for years but this time his father had mentioned his sixteenth birthday, but why?
“Hey Penny, I’m gonna go back upstairs.”
“Sure, sure,” She replied obviously annoyed he wasn’t going to help unpack the rest of the groceries. So Mona wandered back upstairs to his room
