The tiles on the scrabble board were continuously rearranged once the Grandparents arrived for Christmas. My parents came to stay for a few weeks and I became a daughter once again. It was throughout out my Junior High days that My Mom and I started playing Scrabble. The Scrabble board sat between us during passionate discussions about wearing make up and short skirts. We whispered wedding plans and talked about marriage expectations while playing scrabble. The board game afforded many hours of diversion as we awaited the birth of my three children.

I associate Scrabble with being a daughter. My Mother encouraged me to pursue creativity, learn new words and share joy in communication. I was not surprised to hear my mother say to my children, “Let’s play scrabble”.

I watched as Grandma intentionally left vowel tiles open that would enable the children to create words. She listened to their concerns about upcoming math tests and she showed me the gentle art of understanding a childs needs. Standing at the counter with the applesauce I made for my children simmering on the stove I was a daughter learning about being a mother. The children call me Mom and my Mom made me feel like her special daughter. I was caring and cared for, secure in my mothers love.

My husband and my father do not play Scrabble. Many other games tumbled from the game closet during the winter vacation of love. The Yahtzee dice spilled out, the Taboo buzzer sang, and the UNO cards smacked the table. “Grandpa, Grandma will you play with me?” was a familiar refrain.

Many times I watched as my daughter slipped her smooth young hand into my father’s wood weathered palm My Dad is a carpenter but during the Christmas visit he did not make furniture, he created relationships.. He sanded the relationships with card games and stories of days gone by.

My Mom and Dad polished these family relationships with laughter, cups of dice, and tickles of love.

My parents have gone home and I find myself smiling each time I pass the game closet. The happiness echoes across the room, the memories linger sweetly, the relationships continue to thrive. I am a Daughter, I am a Mom, as a family we confidently share our circle of Love.
