know what you are talking about,” Damon said coldly.
“You can’t hide it from me. I’m a soul reader so I know how you feel about her,” Sammy said. I could hear the smile in his voice.
“I still don’t know what you’re talking about,” Damon replied.
“Word of advice, don’t count on a happy ending with her. She still believes her life can only be a tragedy,” Sammy said.
“She isn’t the only one,” Damon said.
“That’s also what I sense about you,” Sammy said. “You have an equal amount of despair in you that I find in Drucilla. It’s so depressing.”
“Can you stop being Dr. Phil and help me wake her or something,” Damon said.
“Just kiss her and she will wake up,” Sammy said.
“Are you insane,” Damon yelled.
“No, this use to happen all the time,” Sammy said. “If you don’t, I will.” I heard a sigh and then felt soft lips on mine. They felt light on my lips but they felt like the universe laid itself in front of me. I blinked to find Damon crouched in front of me. He watched me carefully as I stared at him.
“Welcome back,” he said. I stood up from the chair and he straightened himself as well.
“Look at what you’ve done to my bar,” Sammy whined.
“I am sorry Sammy. I guess this is a bad time for us to hang out,” I said.
“She’s back alright,” Sammy said.
“What is that suppose to mean?” I asked.
“What are you going to do about Megan?”Sammy asked instead.
“What choice do I have but to confront Alexander?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe live,” Sammy screamed.
“I won’t let her die Sam,” I said coldly.
“Just wait here,” he said going to the back of the bar. He disappeared in the back room. He came back with a steel box in his hand. It looked heavy in his hands.
“What is that?” Damon asked.
“Something Megan gave me to hold,” He said placing the box on a table.
“Well, what’s in it?” I asked.
“Open it,” he said. I walked up the box and placed my right hand on the top of it. I tried to lift the lid but it was locked.
“Maybe there is a key,” I said. I watched as Damon placed his hand on the box. There was a hissing noise and then the box opened.
“What’s inside?” Sammy asked.
“Guns and knives,” I answered.
“Your family has a weird way of showing love,” Sammy said. I dug through all the weapons to find a note. I opened it slowly and read Megan’s elegant handwriting out loud:
“‘Dear Drucilla, if you’re reading this now, we have come to an end. I planned for this to happen and you shouldn’t try to save me. You will only get hurt. These are our old weapons. I figured you want to have them. Please stay out of trouble. –Megan’” I finished.
“When are we leaving to find her?” Damon asked.
“Right now,” I said. I picked the box up off the table and handed it to Sammy.”Hold this for me.”
“You never listen,” Sammy grumbled.
“Neither do you. You would do the same for Darcy.” I left the bar leaving Sammy stunned and Damon questioning my every action. I waited in the car for Damon to climb in.
“Are you feeling ok?” Damon asked.
“I heard you two,” I said. I turned the key in the ignition.
“Interesting,” he said avoiding my eyes.
“Soul readers never lie unless their hiding for themselves,” I said. I stepped on the gas.
“Where are we going?” he asked.
“I am going to Romania because that is where he has my sister,” I said.
“I am going with you,” he said.
“This is kind of personal,” I said.
“I don’t care,” he said.
“I can’t let you go,” I said. I stepped on the breaks at a red light.
“I guess you’ll just have to stop me then,” He said.
“There is no time for games,” I screamed.
“Then stop arguing and drive,” he said tapping my hand on the steering wheel. I stepped on the gas and sped down the road. “By the way, how exactly did you kill that boy?”
“He wouldn’t let go and my hand began to glow. I touched his face and he began to gasp for air and then he fell to floor. I screamed for two hours before anyone actually came. After he died I had the taste of alcohol but I wasn’t the one drinking. It was like I drained the life from him.” I shuttered and shook my head.
“Maybe that’s what your gift does. It takes life and gives life. You said it yourself that this gift can save the world or destroy it,” he said.
“But what about the fact that I practically relived everything you have been through,” I said making a right turn down a street.
“Yeah, let’s not ever mention what you saw but I guess the gift ties with your emotion. When I touched you, you were probably feeling curious about me. When he touched you, you were feeling fear. The gift reacts with your emotion,” he said. It made sense because I was curious when he reached for my hand a second time.
“Maybe your right,” I said.
“The question is what are you going to do with your gift,” he asked.
“I am going to stay away from my father. I am going to give myself to Alexander and you’re going to keep her safe,” I said.
“You can’t possibly think I am going to leave you with him. I can’t and I won’t!” he shouted.
“In case you haven’t caught on, my sisters life is more of my concern,” I said.
“But your life is mine,” he said.
“Give me a break. We both know you hate me,” I said turning into our hideout which was a little house so happily paid for by my father.
“I don’t hate you,” he said frustrated.
“Even if you don’t I have to go,” I said. I stepped out the car and ran up the porch stairs. I walked up to my room. I grabbed a duffel bag and began stuffing it with clothes. I pulled my passport out of a shoe box that contained pictures of me and Megan.
“Drucilla, you can’t do this,” Damon said standing in my doorway.
“Yes I can and I have to go. She is all I have. She needs me,” I said.
“I need you,” he said.
“I really don’t have time for games,” I said grabbing a handful of clothes out a dresser draw and throwing it into the bag. I opened the back of the picture frame on my nightstand and took the money that was hidden there. It was about twelve hundred dollars but I had seven debit cards.
“This isn’t a game,” he said walking up to me.
“Damon, why are you making this so hard?” I asked.
“I just don’t want you to go,” he said.
“Well I am going,” I said. I zipped the bag and threw it over my shoulder. I walked past him out the door. He ran ahead of me.
“If I tell you the reasons why will you promise that you will think about what you’re doing,” he said blocking the door.
“I’m listening,” I said leaning on the wall.
“Alexander is my brother and he always get’s what he wants. He isn’t after any gift either. He is after you. Megan is just a tool to him. She is just the bait. Your literally the prize.”
“So why not give him what he wants. This is what I knew what would have to happen,” I said crossing my arms over my chest. He walked up to me and starred me in the eyes. He put a hand on my cheek and my arm dropped to my side. “What are you doing?”
“What I should have done a long time ago,” he said. Then his lips were on mine. They were gentle but urgent. He pulled away and I gasped for air.
“Why did you just kiss me?” I asked still catching my breath.
“You said it yourself. A soul reader doesn’t lie. I always loved you,” he said.
“This doesn’t make sense,” I said covering my face with my hands. “All these years you acted liked you hate me. Why?”
“I had to. Alexander would have found you sooner if I didn’t,” he said.
“I am still going Damon,” I said moving my hands from my face.
“No you are not,” he said.
“If it makes this easier for you, I always thought you were cute,” I said. I straightened the bag on my shoulder and walked around him.
“If you go to him I will never see you again,” he said sadly. I stepped around him and headed for the door. There was a bolt of lightning that just missed my head and hit the wall.
“What was that?” I asked, panicking.
“I refuse to let you,” he said.
“It’s not up to you,” I said, dropping my bag on the floor.
“You don’t know what he is. What he can do. What he has done to me,” Damon said. I never saw him like this before. He seemed scared. I walked up to him and put my hand on his shoulder. I let myself be curious about Alexander and was surprised at the images that flowed through my head.
I saw a boy a little older than Damon. A whole bunch of images appeared but it was the last one that made me scream out in pain. Damon was on the floor and Alexander was standing over him. He began kicking at his rib cage and watched as his brother coughed up blood. Damon lip was busted and his clothes were soaked in blood. Alexander raised his hand which began glowing with fire and he touched Damon’s back. I could feel the heat of what Damon was going through and I screamed even louder. I watched as Damon squirmed under his brother’s hot hand.
“Let go Ace,” Damon told me.
“I can’t,” I cried, not able to move. I watched as Damon screamed and screamed but not able to free himself from Alexander. Alexander finally let go but it was too late. Damon was already slipping away. Damon opened his eyes and looked at his brother before he was gone.
“Damon?” I said.
“I’m right here Ace,” he said pulling my hand from his shoulder. I could see the room around me but I was dizzy. I wasn’t surprised when I lost balance and fell to the ground. I couldn’t stop the scream that burst from my mouth.
“It alright,” Damon said, sitting beside me on the floor. I wiped my eyes and looked at the floor tile.
“It was so real. Your pain, your screams. It was terrible,” I sobbed.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“How long ago?” I asked.
“Only a year. When I told you that your father sent me on a job,” he said. I remember that he went away and he was gone for three weeks.
“Why didn’t you tell me,” I sobbed.
“I was fine,” he said.
“No you weren’t,” I yelled.
“Relax Ace,” he said putting a hand on my shoulder.
“You were in so much pain. I seen it Damon. I felt it,” I sobbed.
“It was nothing. I’m fine,” he said. I gently touched his back and watched him flinch.
“Take your shirt off,” I said, wiping tears from my face.
“No Ace,” he said. I reached behind him and lifted the shirt from over his head. There was a giant red mark in the center of his back. I place my hand on his back thinking only of my sympathy. My hand glowed
“You can’t hide it from me. I’m a soul reader so I know how you feel about her,” Sammy said. I could hear the smile in his voice.
