Hush Darling
It is a clouded Thursday. My thoughtless steps carry me through the Cafeteria, when a distant sound catches my ear. Slowly, I emerge from that grey, dull world of mine, being spiralled back into the wake day. A frail guitar chord casts its spell over me. A crystal voice captivates my mind. My feet, unable to move on, turn towards the source of this magical music, and there she is: a fragile girl dressed in burgundy, clinging to her guitar, singing in a fairytale voice. Her legs shyly crossed, her eyes closed, she sits, deeply sunk in her own universe, softly breathing her gentle words into the microphone. I am overwhelmed, stunned. Where do you come from fair maiden? What brings you here, amidst all these uncaring ignoramuses? The emotions of her song, reflected on her pale face, vibrate in my soul.
“Shut up you cowards!” I want to scream at the gibbering crowd.
Then her clear voice reaches new heights. Strong and confident it echoes in my heart, deafening me for the world. Tears fill my eyes. Her delegate fingers seem to be one with the guitar strings, her music is out of this world. I want to capture every moment, every single one of her notes. Please, do never stop.
How can this tender person sing such breath-taking song? How can she bear this endless melancholy? Suddenly, she looks up, smiling. For a second, she is part of our reality, a brief instant, before her music recommences and she is lost again, starring off into the distance.
She has called in a companion, her perfect match. He adds a gentle percussion to her melody, his face hidden away behind his hair, his feet entangled.
Occasionally, people pass by and make me look up. How can they simply march on? “Listen, fools!” I want to shout. “Can you not hear her magic?” Some, however, linger, spell-bound, hardly daring to move.
Around her, the outlines of the sobering surroundings seem to metamorphose into the soothing colours of a stage. She plays like in spotlight.
Suddenly, I feel I cannot take it any more - the endless beauty of a star-filled night forced into the eye-stabbing cafeteria daylights - when she announces the last song, and my heart breaks into two.
Her music will never let me go again; her wonderful, fascinating voice, her heart, floating on the first lovesong ever written. She is a miracle beyond belief, Damien Rice’s daughter. Still, I have to leave, my feet carry me on, but my soul – my soul stays behind.
What I experienced that very Thursday, was Kris Vesseur’s first solo appearance, a project she has been working on for only about 4 months now. Please visit her profile and listen to that incredible, mind-blowing music of hers:
