Her hands are nervous, shaky. She takes the seat by the window and wonders what she’s doing. She quakes with a knot in her gut. She’s leaving. She closes her eyes and sees her blue eyed little boy. It’s too late; she’s made up her mind. She can’t do this anymore. Her purse tumbles to the floor. She begins to scoop up the contents and notices a crumpled piece of paper. Unraveling it, she shudders. “MOM,” it reads, “have a good day!” Jerking to her feet she sprints to the door of the train. Hesitant. Doubtful. She takes a step.
“Mother, Mother!” The wind sighs. It pleads with her heart, tugging and pulling. She rubs the slight bump of her belly. This will be the last moment of its life. For an instant she imagines her child laughing. For whatever reason has brought her here, no longer seems to be as important as the child itself. Tears fall from young eyes. She takes a step back. The father doesn’t care. She takes a step forward. A baby cooing softly. She takes a step back. She has no money. She takes a step forward. “Mommy!” She hears. She turns and leaves.
Screams fill the night with fear and happiness. So much work, so very exhausted. Pants of breath come rapidly. A cold wash cloth on her forehead eases the heat of her labor. The air is thick with anticipation. All the while the thud, thud of a little heart can be heard throughout the room. Finally the baby’s little head, and then all of her appears. Comforting arms hold her little trembling body. No other could be more proud. Tiny fingers and tiny little toes, perfect. A pink mouth pouts into a cry. “Mother” her husband smiles. It’s a perfect beginning.
