Chapter 1
Harlem Thomas was completely naked and wrapped in a sheet. Her clothes were literally strewn all over the room. She had just slept with Carter Owens–THE Carter Owens. Of all the men on the planet, Carter Owens! There wasn’t any basking in the afterglow of sex. Harlem was too busy panicking.
She was beside herself and still reeling from her lapse in judgment when Elaina walked in on them. For a split second, Elaina’s face twisted into a mask of fury. However, she quickly recovered.
Harlem had never been involved in any kind of relationship drama–until now. It was all so surreal and much too much to process. Harlem watched the confrontation unfold more like a spectator than a participant.
“Well, well, well. I mean, damn.” Elaina stood above them with her arms crossed. “No wonder I couldn’t get through to your phone, Carter. You were too busy fuckin’ your best friend's girl.”
Carter grabbed his pants which weren’t too far away, put them on, and stood. “What are you doing here unannounced?!”
“I came over to apologize, but instead, I find my boyfriend with another woman. Not just any woman. I could accept someone else, but you’re screwing Harlem?”
He tried to guide Elaina out of the room. “Let’s go.”
She snatched her arm away. “I’m not going any damn where!” Elaina pointed a long skinny finger at Harlem. “That bitch has everything to do with why we’re not together!”
“That’s a lie! How the hell did you get in here!?”
“Did you forget you gave me a key?” Elaina’s eyes were spitting fire. “I came over hoping we could make up and celebrate Valentine’s Day together. But you seem to be having the time of your life with the woman you’ve always wanted to be with.” Elaina sneered. “I love your flowers Harlem, their beautiful.”
Carter knew how this situation might look to Harlem. Typical hoe-like behavior when it was anything but. Carter worked to control his rising anger. He didn’t owe Elaina an explanation. “I told you, our problems have nothing to do with her.”
“Really? You couldn’t even make me the priority on Valentine’s Day, and then I find you here with her. That’s a problem. She’s not your woman–or maybe she is. I’ve always known you’ve wanted Harlem. Screwing me and calling out her name was clue enough, but I never thought she would sleep with you. At least not this soon after Damian’s death.”
“Let’s go! NOW.” Carter roared.
“Before I leave, let me share a bit of news I think might interest you both. Maybe I’ll move higher up the hierarchy of importance. You might even make me a priority now that–” Elaina spoke to Carter but looked around him, and like a laser, locked in on Harlem. “I’m pregnant with your baby too.”
The room became so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“You’re lying.” Carter did not believe her. “Don’t stoop this low.”
Elaina brought her eyes that were filled with fury back to his. “I can assure you that I am indeed pregnant.”
“You’re going to have to prove that shit.” There was no way Carter was willing to take her word for it.
Elaina shrugged. “Fine. Make an appointment.” She rubbed her hands together as she smiled with a faux animated glee. “Maybe we can go have pancakes at Benny’s after we visit the doctor.” It was a not-so-subtle jab at the morning she found Harlem and Carter having breakfast at his favorite restaurant.
Carter glanced over his shoulder back at Harlem to see how she was handling the craziness. She looked shell-shocked.
What kind of Flavor of Love, Love and Hip Hop drama is this? Harlem was going to be sick.
He had to get Elaina out of his house. “Done. I’ll set it up. Until then, you need to go.”
Elaina didn’t like his sharp tone. For now, she would let it slide. Her announcement had to come as a shock. Once it wore off, she was sure Carter would shower her with the same amount of attention he gave to Harlem. “Fine. I’ll leave. But, I’ll be ready to go confirm my pregnancy whenever you are.”
Carter walked Elaina out.
As soon as they left the room, Harlem didn’t waste any time and hurriedly got dressed. What was I thinking? Everything about this situation was wrong, and the least of it was Elaina claiming to be pregnant. She didn’t believe
