“Assembly?” Eddie asked.
“Yeah, Assembly. Back home, our country’s government has a House of Assembly. They were responsible for making the laws of the country, so the members pretty much ran the country. This is your assembly, and you are the head. You decide what happens here,” Raphael said.
“I guess you are right. As far as the family business, I was put in a situation to make a decision, and I chose what I felt was best for the family, you know,” Eddie said.
“Hey, you’re my little cousin who is no longer little. I can’t judge you; you did what you had to do. I’m impressed by the decision you have made on behalf of your family. I respect the way you have stepped up. I appreciate that you recognise the age gap between us and call me uncle. The respect does not go unnoticed,” Raphael said.
“Thanks, Uncle Raphael, that means a lot to me. So, guys, I hope you’ll be able to hold down the fort in Fynnwood whenever I can’t make it. Uncle Raphael will be counting on you to play your part,” Eddie said.
“I don’t have a problem with it, Eddie, I’ll work things out with my parents. How about you, Alex?” Chris said.
“I’m in, no problem. Chris and I are all the way in, Uncle Raphael,” replied Alex.
“Good. I will come up with a plan to get the drugs to Fynnwood, Uncle Raphael. Leave that to me,” said Eddie.
“Are you sure?” Raphael asked.
“Yes. No one will suspect kids our age of having that much weight. We have a better chance of getting it to Fynnwood without your involvement,” Eddie said.
“Good, it is settled then. Just let me know when you are ready. I’ll be leaving now, say goodbye to Anna and Isabel for me,” Raphael said.
“No problem, I’ll do that,” Eddie replied.
“Hey guys, be very careful. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how dangerous this is,” Raphael said.
“We’ll be careful, Uncle Raphael,” Eddie replied.
Eddie already had a plan. He was going to repackage the heroin and cocaine, because it still had the Sin Nombre brand on it. To transport the drugs to Fynnwood, he had devised a plan to buy three travel cases to put the drugs in and cover it with clothing. Then he was going to hire an airport taxi to pick them up along with the bags. The cover story would be that they needed to fly to Houston for a school debate. They would tell the taxi driver they needed to pick up their team coach in Fynnwood on their way to the airport. Anyone curious enough would see that there was something odd about kids needing to pick up an adult and not the other way around. However, Eddie knew the taxi driver wouldn’t be interested in whatever was going on. Most taxi drivers only wanted to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, so they could get to their next passenger.
Upon arrival at Raphael’s, Eddie would pretend to call the team coach from the taxi to tell him they had arrived and were waiting outside. After a couple of seconds, Eddie would pretend there had been a mix-up, saying another taxi had been booked by the coach by mistake and the taxi would arrive in fifteen minutes. The boys would opt to take that taxi instead. Eddie would pay the full fare so as not to upset the driver and attract even more attention to the situation. He had thought about everything in case they were pulled over by the police. He even looked up flight times to make sure they coincided with the journey time to Fynnwood and then to the airport. If the cops asked for plane tickets, they would say that they had been reserved and ready for collection at the airport. Eddie was thorough.
Chapter 22
Distribution of Narcotics and Firearms
Where: Edom Group, The United Nations of Europe and Americas, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
When: 1030 hours, Thursday, November 7, 2041
Currency: UNEA credits
The previous day had been a really long one, and we were completely shattered. We decided this morning’s meeting would not be as early as the previous day’s. We pulled up to the main entrance of Edom Group around 10:30 am. The door opened, and I stepped out of the vehicle and headed towards the massive glass doors. There was the usual activity in the lobby: employees who worked in the building were scanning their way through the security barriers using their comms devices. I had a separate entrance to the offices. To the far left of the lobby near the security desk was a narrow entrance with a glass barrier. We headed to the private entrance and as we got close, the security staff gave me a nod as they opened the barrier from their desk. There was a private elevator that went straight to my office lobby, bypassing the other floors.
Two of the guys from my security team got in the elevator with me, and the other two remained in the lobby downstairs. Although there were other offices on the thirty-second floor, there was no way of getting to my wing without using the private elevator or the emergency shoot. The shoot had only one entrance, from the top floor, and an exit to the basement parking lot. Both were secured by magnetically bolted doors that could only be controlled from the security desk and from my personal and office comms. These were designed to quickly get me out of the building during a fire or any kind of attack. The convoy would be on standby in these sort of
