It’s a knife to the chest,
A pounding in the temples that has no resolve.
It can manifest itself as a scar,
And appears in the most doubtful of places.
But you anticipate it,
You dread it.

Apprehensive to leave your home,
You sit and wait for something, anything to happen.
Any indication that you did what was right.
A smell to remind you of better days,
Or an influence that reassures you.
A sign that creation is on your side.
But it never comes.

You were conscious of it from the beginning.
Everybody cautioned you, watch your step.
But you shot off the precipice, you didn’t listen.
You never do.

It is because of this that you lay lifeless
In every sense of the word.
Inside and out,
At the bottom of the precipice,
Waiting for the world to take pity on you.
To show mercy, knowing full well what to expect.

Because you’ve been here before,
Not because you acted erroneously,
But because humanity wants you to feel you did.
