Darius Gloop was an artist, sure
But was not very good so he was quite poor.
He painted and sculpted, did things of that ilk
But his main income came from delivering milk.

He spent all his money on brushes and paint
But his Mum said, ‘Oh come on, Daz, Picasso, you ain’t!’
But he didn’t care ’cos he had a scheme
Of covering every surface in paint it would seem.

As he trundled along in the early first light
Dreaming of more things he could sketch with delight
He didn’t think of the milk in the back
But only of colours, green red and black.

He dreamily carried the milk through the gate
And stepped in a puddle. Well, it was fate
‘Cos whirling around was the rainbow hue
Of green and yellow and pink and blue.

He stopped in his tracks and gazed at the pool
In the cold of the dawn, it looked like a jewel.
‘Oi!’ Gimme my milk you stupid old fellow!’
It was one of his customers who had given a bellow

But Darius was transfixed with a gleam in his eye
He could see the stars and the blue of the sky
He knelt on the path in the wet and the frost
It was no good yelling as he was lost

‘Gimme my milk!’ the man repeated
But Darius had a new pattern almost completed
On a canvas at home in his imaginative eye
That was probably nonsense to you and I.

But he didn’t care, not a jot nor a fig
And rushed home, milk bottle in hand, did a jig
And set to work on his grand new creation
But it didn’t go well, and led to frustration

But then he thought of his great idea
And painted the milk bottle and it was clear
That this was the breakthrough he’d been waiting for
Except that peering through the door……..

……..was a thin man with blond hair named Andy I believe
And it was right there that he did conceive
His idea of painting a tin of tomato soup
So that’s why no-one’s heard of Darius Gloop!
