My Silk Robe My Gold Rings

Everyone has a desire, and we are looking for a way to achieve that. When an opportunity comes, you grab it though you know it gratifies dishonesty and fraudulence. This poem is a loose interpretation of a story in the Bible, Zacchaeus. He was a man with shortcomings, yearning to be rich. His occupation allowed him to collect possessions through cheating and stealing from the powerless. He became very rich, much more than he desired it to be. However, he felt empty. He questioned all his achievements and possessions. Not until he realised that Jesus came to seek and to save the lost like him, when he repented and gave away all his possessions to the poor.

I’m just a worried lonesome short little man

You can tell by the way I walk

I hate my look

I hate myself

I wanna be as tall as y’ll

I’ve got the warrant

Your hard-earned dime is under my mercy

I’ve got glitters

Zacchaeus got a big house

Zacchaeus got glitters

To make me as tall as y’ll

You look away not at me

I see your soiled bare foot

On the ground by your spit

Then I see my shiny shoes

My silk robe

My gold rings

You don’t look at me at all

I collected dime from you

Much more than you obliged to

Cheating stealing

That’s me

How can I be so blind?

I got lost couldn't find my way
And I guess there's nothing more to say

I hate myself therewithal

It has a song too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3lG7jSphtI
