Drama With the Freshman
It had all been a blur the past six weeks. I had transitioned from home school to entering school for the first time as a Freshman. On my first day I had been embarrassed by a cruel boy called Michael, during Math and taunted by a mean girl named Lindsey and her gang at lunch.
That same day, at lunch I met four people. There was Chloe, a girl with long red hair, Renee, a girl with short chestnut hair and a small nose, Jon, a tall boy with glasses and Peter a handsome boy with dark brown, short hair.
After the few first weeks of school I was awkwardly asked out by Michael whom I despised, and then I was asked out by Peter.
Now, let me tell you about Peter. He has the kind of eyes that are always bright and whenever you look into them, they’re like a black hole, you just never want to look away, he is one of the kindest boys, I have ever met, he is super smart, and into computers and math, same as me.
We aren’t nerdy, just smart.
I remember the day he asked me out. It was after lunch, I always go straight to my locker so I can pack up for Governor School, where I take Musical Theatre.
I was packing up, and double checking my planner for any homework I might have missed, when I saw Peter, Renee and Chloe walking up to me. I zipped up my backpack, and swung it onto my shoulder.
“Hey guys,” I smiled
“Hey Jeanine.” greeted Chloe, her red hair as conspicuous as ever
“What are you doing here?” I asked, usually no one got a chance to talk to me after lunch.
“Oh, Peter just wanted to say something.” Renee had a mischievous smile on her face, “Oh, look at the time!” Renee exclaimed
“We had better get to class.” Chloe said, the two girls sauntered off giggling and laughing all down the hall.
“So,” said Peter gazing at me with those ‘black hole’ eyes,
“So,” I looked down at my feet. Watching them shuffle awkwardly.
“Ummm,” Suddenly Peter’s hand launched for mine, he held it close to his heart. I was so surprised that I stepped back, and bumped into my locker. “Oh, I’m sorry.” Peter said apologizing and quickly dropping my hand, “I’m just trying to say, well, umm, would you go to the movies with me on Saturday?” Peter looked at me. I looked at him in disbelief.
His question startled me so much that I nearly bumped into the lockers again. As I searched his eyes my stomach went all soupy, and started feeling very strange. I had never felt this way before. In my previous home schooling experience, seven out of every ten boys were jerks who didn’t care about your feelings at all. It wasn’t my fault that I had this sexist opinion, my mother had strongly influenced me in that direction. But now, this kind, gentle boy who does
care about my feelings was asking me to be his girlfriend.
He looked at me, his face taut with worry. I thought, I had never felt like this about a boy before, maybe I really did love him. But I don’t know, I’d only been “asked out” once before, by Michael, and I hated him. I didn’t know what to do, if I said no, than he would be devastated, and hate me for life; just like Michael, but if I said yes, who knew what would happen. I looked at him in the most meaningful way I could, he looked at me expectantly.
“I don’t know.” I finally breathed quietly. Peter’s face fell. “I really like you as a friend, but I..I’ve..well...” I thought, what could go wrong, I really liked Peter, and he was nice. Befor I could change my mind I suddenly blurted out: “I’ll see you there.” the smile on Peter’s face could have kept the whole of Eastern America powered for a full week. Peter leaned in, I suddenly began to lean towards him. Just then the bell rang and broke the spell. I picked up my backpack, and ran down the hall. If I didn’t hurry I would miss my bus to Governor School.
It was Saturday night. The girls and I had bought some jean-shorts, an adorable top, and cute shoes for my outfit tonight. Peter who lived a few blocks down walked to my house to pick me up. He said,
“You look nice.”
“Thanks.” I smiled shyly.
He grabbed my hand and we started walking. We talked about nothing in particular as we walked, just trying to get to know each other.
Once we reached the theater, we bought some popcorn and settled into our movie. The movie was about two hours long so we would have plenty of time together.
About ten minutes into the movie, Peter and I leaned in to kiss, but just then there was a big bang in the movie and we sat back down.
During the movie we both whispered comments to each other, and laughed at certain parts. I was really enjoying myself.
It was getting close to the end of the movie, Peter’s arm was around me and I was leaning on his shoulder. I whispered something about the movie in his ear. He looked at me, I smiled back. He leaned in. I closed my eyes.
I had never kissed a boy, in my life, I didn’t know what to do. He leaned closer still. We bumped noses, I tilted my head and kissed him as hard as I could. It’s a good thing my braces got off last week, I thought. We continued kissing for probably five minutes.
I sat back.
He smiled at me. We touched noses, and he whispered,
“I love you!” I smiled and said,
“I love you more!” he grinned and replied,
“I love you most!”
