Mercy looked out over the expanse of waves crashing at the ships hull. She felt pensive. She blamed her feelings on the fact that her life was very restricted. This was her first time doing anything outside of the castle. She felt impowered. She was one of the Princesses brought into this world by Richard Carlilse II and Elizabeth Carlisle, the King and Queen of England. Mercy was often neglected. She knew she was not the favored child.
Prince Edward, the King-to-be, was the favorite of all England! Mercy was invisable to everyone. The only person she could trust was her father. She felt she could tell him anything.
Matayo ran through the woods, until he reached the bayou. When he reached the bayou, he perched himself on the highest rock there. He always came here to think. His father had talked to one of the other tribes to plan for his bride-to-be. Matayo was not sure if he wanted to wed a woman he had never seen. Though, he knew he could trust his fathers judgement, it still made him feel uneasy.
He was much more nervous of the Great Hunt tomorrow, and needed to clear his thoughts. He wasn't for sure, but he felt like something was approaching, something that would change his life. When he arrived back to his village, his father and mother were waiting for him in front of his hut. There, waiting with them, was the village medicine woman, Kaya.
"Matayo!" she exclaimed with a serious look on her face, "Come with me." Matayo followed without argue. Kaya turned and put her frail hands on his broad shoulders. "You must trust your instincts on what is coming and be ready for change." She said looking straight into his eyes.
"Yes but, Kaya, what is coming?" he asked, astonished by the way she felt it too. Kaya didn't say anything, she only walked away.
"Mercy," King Richard said, "I know you are feeling anxious about our journey to The New Land."
"Yes, father, I am. I don't know what to expect when we arrive there." Mercy replied with an uncertain look in her eyes.
"You mustn't be afraid. I will be with you." he said with a dazzling smile. Mercy smiled back, though she didn't know why. How could she smile when she was so uncertain of so many things?!
"Thank you father." she simply replied.
After Matayo had finished his conversation with Kaya, he went to his hut to sleep for the night. When Matayo awoke the next morning, all the hunters gathered, to go on The Great Hunt. Running through the forest was a hobby to Matayo and soon he reached the ocean shore. He seen something that he had never seen before. It looked like a kayak, but much bigger. Aboard it were light skinned people. One young woman stuck out to him though, a pale skinned girl, with rose red lips and brown hair. He thought she was really beautiful and couldn't take his eyes off of her.
Mercy saw someone on the shore. He was quite handsome, with cinnamon colored skin, bright brown eyes and long black hair. He wore no shirt and had a great deal of muscles.
"Savage!" King Richard yelled.
"Father! I am quite ashamed! You taught me not to ever judge a human by their skin color or lifestyle!" Mercy said appauled.
"Mercy! It's an Indian!" he said, shocked.
"He is a person and should be treated like one! With respect!" Mercy snapped back.
Soon, the ship came ashore. Matayo was still on the shore and as people exited, they noticed the Indian standing near by. They all froze, stiff, stuck, trapped and not knowing which way to go. Mercy walked torward him and knew he wouldn't hurt her. She is not a rude person and knew she wouldn't say anything to offend him.
"Hello," She said, "My name is Mercy Carlisle, Might I know yours?"
"Matayo," He replied.
"And how old are you?" She asked.
"I have lived for seventeen winters." He said proudly. Mercy was shocked by how precisely he spoke her language.
"Will you come and have tea with me on my ship tomorrow?" She asked, she thought maybe she was upsetting him with her questions but asked anyways.
"Sure..." He said in a tone of disbelief, he didn't know a ship was, I will ask my father what she means by "a ship", He thought to himself.
Matayo raced back home. Ran past trees and bushels of berries. As he ran, the cold air hit him hard, in his face and on his half naked body. The cold air wrapped around him like barbed-wire, Squeezed his body at every spot of flesh available. He was cold, after all it was October, the begining of "The Cold Months" as his tribe would say.
Matayo finally reached his village.
"Mother, Father," He began kneeling. "May I speak with you in private?"
"Of course, son." Said his mother. The three of them walked into his parents hut and Matayo told them the whole story.
"Ah, the English people are here. They don't like Indians son, they might not be kind to you..." His father said a little distrurbed.
"Father, may I please have you blessing to go?" Matayo begged. Just as his father was about to say 'no', Kaya had shown herself from behind the shadows. "Do what your heart tells you, Matayo." Kaya said. Matayo shook his head and thanked her and thanked his father.
The next day, Matayo ran to the shore, by now there were tents put up and houses being built on the extent of land that hadn't had any trees on it. Matayo told the guard who he was and the gaurd announced his arrival.
"Princess Mercy, Matayo has arrived and wishes to speak with you..." He said.
"Ah yes, do come in." She said gesturing to the chair next to her. "Would you like a cup of tea?"
"Yes." he said. Well he obviously must work on his manners! She thought.
"So what shall we converse of?" She asked.
"You British people have and odd way of talk." He said flashing her a bright, smile. Mercy could feel her face growing hot, she was blushing.
"Well, 'tis the was I was brought up..." she snapped back, not too harshly but enough to let him know she was a little upset.
"Alright, so your a Princess are you?" He asked.
"Yes, I am," She replied softly, now that her nerves were calmed down.
"And I am a Prince." He said.
"No your not, You can't be, Your an Indain..." She said. Matayo laughed.
"Oh, so just because I'm an Indian means that I can not be a Prince? Princess Mercy, I am a Prince because my father is the chief of the Seneca's." He stated.
"Oh, I didn't know sava---, I mean, Indians could be Princes and what not." Mercy said and closed her eyes tight. I almost called him a savage...I hope he didn't catch that... she thought.
"Ah, I see, I think I should go," He said and ran out of the tent. Does she really think I'm a savage? He asked himself over and over again. He didn't go back there for weeks, Am I doing the right thing by not going to see her? He wondered.
"Why are you not at the shore?" Kaya asked.
"She almost called me a savage!" He said and his eyes watered. He felt disbelief in what was just said. He couldn't believe the girl he had fallen for almost called him that, or that that's actually what she thought of him as. A Savage!
"Oh Matayo, I can see she means alot to you." Kaya replied.
"Yes she does, but I don't think she feels the same way," he said hesitantly.
"You should go see! Go! Ask her!" Kaya strongly suggested.
Mercy went to take an evening stroll. When she got to a quiet, closed off place, she cried. When will he come back to me? she asked herself. Just then, she heard a loud, mighty roar, and she froze. Mercy looked around, finally, and saw three pairs of Silky Golden eyes surrounding her. They were Jaguars! They jumped out of the bushes and trees and started creeping toward her.
Mercy had one escape route, which was behind her but she knew if she turned and ran, it would be all over, so she did what she thought would be the smartest thing to do, she stood up, as if to frighten off the beasts. Wrong move.
Matayo ran through the forest, as fast as his long, tanned, muscular legs could carry him, whcih was pretty fast. A couple moments before, he was at the shore, talking to King Richard about her whereabouts. Such a silly girl to go into the forest by herself, he thought as he ran. He saw a large tree and began to climb it. When he reached a high branch, he saw her predicament and sighed. Then she rose to face the beasts and he felt his chest tighten with fear and his adrenaline heightened to instinct.
One of the jaguars, which seemed to be the leader, pounced on Mercy. He managed to get three claw marks on her arm, that was probably going to need stiches, and four claw marks on her stomach. Just as it was about to bite into her, Matayo came in swinging on a thick, green-ish brown vine, and kicked the jaguar off!
He did a backflip off the vine, which would have impressed Mercy if she wasn't knocked unconscience. He landed on his feet and the jaguar jumped on him and they flipped and spun with red drops of blood, sprinkling the dirt like Enchanted Rubies.
Finally, one jaguar down and two to go! He grabbed his arrows before he left but he dropped them when he got attacked. He sprinted for them. By the time he got them, the jaguars were running straight for him! He shot two separate arrows and hit both of them! One in between the eyes and one in the neck! He supposed he hit it in the jugular because it dropped as soon as the arrow hit.
Matayo rushed to Mercy's side and put his ear to her breast. He listened. Listening and listening, trying to find a heartbeat and finally, he heard one. Matayo picked her small body up and carried her to the shore.
"What happened?!" King Richard said.
"She was attacked by Jaguars, three of them. I can barely hear her heartbeat...She needs help, now!" Matayo said. He was so worried, he felt like his heart was being crushed. Ripped out of his chest and left there to slowly die.
"Doctor!" The King yelled, VERY loudly. The doctor came rushing to his
