In a time yet to be seen in the city of Siren Valley two sisters were born named May and October. Their mother died before she could even hold them, and their father was too busy protecting the town to care for them so they went to live with their grandmother, Nina. She raised them to think of others and stay together no matter what happens.
It was on their 10th birthday that they discovered their natural born power. May had the ability to see into the future, and because of this she seemed bored with life, looking gloomy and depressed. October had the ability to turn back time whenever sung, but it came with a price that made it so she rarely used. With their abilities they were able to stop all that was bad from happening and fix the mistakes that were made.
“Is anything big happening today, May?” October asked while balancing on the cracks in the sidewalk.
“No,” May murmured, looking gloomily at the cracks, “Everything is normal as always. Oh except…”
“Yeah, what?” October said, excitedly, turning around to look at May, but instead screamed when she saw a group of wild turkeys walking behind them. “Run May!” She yelled and ran down the street.
“I forgot to tell you that you are going to get chased to school by a gang of turkeys,” May said with a small smile that quickly vanished. “It was funnier this morning.”
October raced quickly to school with May following slowly behind. Because of their father’s high status of chief of police they were able to have every class together, even lunch, throughout their entire elementary, middle, and high school career. It was in the cafeteria that May got the vision.
“The Shadow,” she said, eyes down casted on her full tray.
“The Shadow?” October whispered beside her, “What is he doing?”
“Burning down the Siren Valley Public Library.”
“What? Why?”
“For a book,” May responded.
“A book?” October wondered aloud and then to herself, ‘Why burn down the library for just one back and what is this book?’ She was about to ask May when she said,
“Brian will be here, in 3.6 seconds to ask you to the movies,” sounding a bit amused.
“What? Not again!” October said when a blonde haired boy stopped at the table, red faced and nervous.
“Uh, hey October,” He stuttered. “I was wondering if you wanted to see a movie with me on Friday, if you’re not busy.”
“Actually,” October said, “I’m planning a study party at the library; you’re invited if you want to come.”
“Oh, um, okay,” he smiled, “I’ll see you there.”
“Awesome and don’t be afraid to invite as many people as you like,” she called after him.
“I didn’t know we were having a study party Friday,” May murmured.
“We weren’t, but that was before I knew the shadows plan,” October said, “This time he won’t get away.”
The library was filled with people that Friday, more than October has anticipated. Although it was supposed to be a study party there was more talking going on than memorizing math formulas.
“Do you think he’ll a show up?” May asked, staring at her shoes as she and October sat on one of the couches.
“The shadow? Maybe, depends on what he’s looking for and how much he needs it,” October said, “Which, I’ve been meaning to ask, did you see what the book was?”
“It was the World Atlas,” May answered.
“You’re kidding, you mean he want to burn down an entire library for The World Atlas?” October exclaimed confused, “He can buy one of those anywhere.”
“Shh, he might be here,” May whispered.
“”Oh, right,” May said, lowering her voice, “Well, where is The World Atlas anyway?”
“We should ask Miss Brighte,” May said. Miss Bright was the librarian, a cold, malicious woman whose eyes narrowed when May and October approached.
“I hope you two realize that any damage done here will fall upon your little heads,” she said before either of them could speak.
“Yes, ma’am,” both said, neither actually agreeing.
“Miss Brighte, where do you keep the World Atlas?” October asked.
“Why do you need that?” Miss Brighte asked curtly.
“Study reasons,” May said.
“Oh really?” Miss Brighte looked at both with criticizing eyes. “I’ll retrieve it, I keep the only copy we have in my office to insure its safety. These aren’t cheap.” She left and returned with the large book in hand. She reached out to give it to October but it never touched her hand because a man in black jumped onto the desk, grabbed the book, and ran off.
“Come on, May,” October said, grabbing her sisters hand and chasing after the man just when a girl screamed “fire!” and the alarm went off and the sprinklers came on. May and October continued to run after the Shadow anyway, racing between bookshelves and shoving past hysterical students before running into a dead end at the corner of the library, the Shadow nowhere in sight. October was about to turn when May said,
“Duck,” bending down along with October as the knife sped past them. “Jump,” she said before another knife came, aiming towards their legs. This continued, May giving directions as the knives came flying towards them, while the library slowly burned. Finally the assailant ran out of weapons, and the girls out of breath. “It’s not safe in here,” May said.
“Really,” October said, sarcastically, “what told you that, the knives or the fire?”
“Listen to your sister,” the voice of a man said, “leave now and I might spear you.”
“Shadow, why are you doing this?” October called out, “what’s in that book?” Without warning May sat down and looked at her hands. “What’s wrong May?” October asked just as a figured came from the bookshelves, lunging towards October, arms spread, before falling on the ground face down with a knife jutting from their back. October ran to them and turned them over to show it was Brian, red faced and sweating. “What are you doing here?” October demanded.
“There was a man…” Brian stuttered, “Standing on the bookshelf…with a knife….” October didn’t know how to respond. Brian had just saved her life.
“May,” she said, “What do we do?”
“Sing a song,” she said, staring at the burning books near her. October frowned, and nodded. And then she sang.
