THE DROUGHT

THE DROUGHT

The rain. Why will it not come? We have waited for three years for
the rain to come and end this drought, but still, the rain does not
come. We pray to God for an answer or to help us… But nothing happens.
We have waited. We have rushed outside every time we hear thunder in
the distance. No rain comes. The storm seems to go right around us
each time, and when it doesn’t, there is no rain.
Why is there no rain? We are running low on our last reserves of water.
We cannot last much longer, and our food supply is nearing its end as well.
What can we do but pray for the rain to come? Sure, we were prepared for a
drought, but not one this long. Who has ever heard of such a long drought?
Three years has the sweltering heat driven away all chances
of rain. Three years has the blistering winds ravaged our village,
slowly breaking down our houses and homes. Where is the miracle
we so desperately need? Where is the water? We will not make it if it does
not rain soon. We saved enough water for six years, but the blistering
winds stole much of it away. Soon, we will have to rely on cutting
cacti to get the water stored within them. One can only pray
that it is enough.
It seems as though there may be no hope left. We have begged
and pleaded with our Almighty God to bring the rain to us,
so we may at least replenish our supplies, but His priorities seem to
be elsewhere at the moment. Oh, how we need that rain, yet it refuses
to so much as rain a single drop. Looking up at the dark clouds that
have gathered above us in the sky, we are filled with despair, as this
is going to be like all the other times. The thunder booms and the
lightning crackles, and still, no rain comes. This may be the end of
us, as the cacti seem to have moved in the night. They are much
further away than we thought. Wearied by the lack of water, as it is
now all gone, we return to our homes, and take to our beds. However,
when we awake, we hear the sound we have longed to hear for so long...
It is raining.
As one, we rush out, and lo and behold, water is falling from the sky,
making our hearts lift with renewed hope. We all, as one, take to our knees
and cry out our thanks to the Lord for his blessed gift, and the renewing of
our hope for life.
