My life has always been boring. Day in and day out, the same thing over and over again. An endless schedule of never ending boredom. Go to school, go to work, go home. Day after day after day. All I wanted was a little change, just something a little different. I sat at the host desk, it was a rainy Saturday in September. It was a slow morning at the restaurant. I watched the rain run down the window panes. The clouds grumbled and moaned. Contrary to the weatherman's beliefs, the storm was not letting up. Thunder boomed through the air. The small restaurant shook, so did my heart. A crack of lightning flashed illuminating the sky and the rain began to pour even harder. Suddenly the little bell over the door rang, I jumped only to realize it was just a customer. He looked about my age and was soaking wet. His dirty blonde hair dripped into his eyes. His skin was a dark olive tone, which was weird to see in the rainy city. I instantly realized he was not from here. He was probably from California or somewhere with more than 65 days of sunshine. He had green eyes really green eyes, almost too green to be real.
“May I help you?” His voice interrupted.
“Um no-I mean follow me.” I stuttered as my face turned bright red. The boy chuckled. I could feel my whole body heating up in embarrassment as I quickly seated him and rushed into the kitchen. I sat down on a stool just inside the kitchen door to catch my breath. How stupid I thought, how could I be so stupid? Finally I regained enough courage to walk back out. I stood up, grabbed my notebook and strutted out. I stopped next to his table with a smile.
“Welcome to Denny’s, may I take your order?” I asked.
“Two pancakes and an over easy egg.” He said. I wrote down the order, with a smile and asked,
“Anything to drink?”
“Just water please.” I walked back to the kitchen my whole body shaking. Fifteen minutes later the food was ready and I had to venture back to the. I walked out with the food in my hand and set it on his table. He responded with a smile and a wink. A wink, no way I thought, I must be imagining things. I walked back to the kitchen and peered through the small window in the door.
“What are you doing?” a voice boomed behind me?” I jumped up and spun around.I could hear my heartbeat getting louder. “Uh nothing Charlie.” I stuttered a blank look on my face. Charlie was the manager.
“Well, get back to work.”
“Okay.” I said as I turned around and glanced back out the small window. To my ultimate surprise he was gone. I pushed open the door and walked to the table. On its surface laid the exact change for an untouched meal. I picked up the plate it was still hot. I looked back at the table: next to the cash was an extra five dollar bill. Probably a tip, on it was written: Chase Williams 746-4851. My stomach twisted as a smile spread across my face. My heart fluttered, the whole day seemed brighter. The rest of the day was very slow, Very few customers came. I watched the clock, slowly ten o'clock, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock.Three felt as if it would never come. Eventually the end of my shift approached I willed the clock to move faster. When the clock finally hit three, I rushed to the computer and signed out. I grabbed my jacket and walked out the door. The rain from the morning had continued through the day, so the air smelt clean and fresh. I loved the smell of rain. By the time I had made it to my black 1989 Ford Ranger my hair was dripping. I sat in the front seat and turned the key. Clank, Clank, Clank the car sputtered.I slammed my hand against the top of the steering wheel. Come on I thought, I stroked the inside of the door and quietly begged.
“Please.” I whispered. I turned the key for a second time. Silently praying for power. Clank, Clank, clank, Vroom. The engine roared to life.
“Yes!” I praised. I pulled out of the parking lot and drove home. I parked in the driveway and dragged through the front door.
"Mom, I'm home!" I yelled into the quiet house. I raced up the stairs into my room slamming the door behind me, throwing my backpack on the floor. I walked up to my dresser and emptied out my pockets. Some spare change, my headphones, and a five dollar bill. I picked up the five dollar bill, and eyed it over. Chase Williams, such a normal name. Should I text text him I thought, nah I should at least wait a couple days. I threw the money back on my dresser, and picked up my backpack. I pulled out my physics book and the work sheet Mr. Hall had assigned. I dropped my head into my textbook and moaned. What had gotten into me, why did I ever sign up for AP Physics. I took another look at the work sheet and slammed my book shut. I got up walked back down the stairs towards the front door.
“Mom, I’m going out!” I yelled once again into the house. I slammed the front door and emerged into the fresh air. I walked over to my truck, and this time she started with ease. I pulled out and headed off to the mall. It was my favorite place to go and think. I pulled in the parking lot unable to find a parking place as always. I groaned frustrated as I waited behind a Honda that insisted on taking its time. Finally I parked and got out. I walked through the entrance on my way to my favorite bench by the huge mall fountain. Suddenly I was ripped out of my thoughts as another body clashed into mine. I dropped my purse and, my sunglasses fell off my face.
“Hey watch it…” I grumbled looking up. The first thing I saw was green, green eyes. I gasped, and looked back down.
“Look I’m really sorry.” He said.
“Um, its no problem really.” I responded. I looked back up, I recognized the dirty blonde hair and olive skin.
I’m Chase.” He said offering his hand to me. I reached out, and shook it.
“I know.” I said. He looked a little taken back, but I quickly explained.
“I’m a waitress at Denny’s.”
“Oh now I remember your that girl.” He said holding back a laugh. I blushed.
“Ya, but that girl has a name.”
“May I ask what that is.”
“Linsey, my name is Lindsey.”
“Well pleasure to meet you Lindsey.”
“No, really the pleasure is all mine.”
“So, do you wanna get some yogurt or something in the food court, its the least I could do after knocking you out?” He asked. I paused to process, was he like interested in me, or like what. I squealed inside.
“That sounds like fun.” I said with a smile. We walked towards the escalator, and up into the food court. He walked up to the counter.
“Welcome to Frosties, may I take your order.” The clerk groaned. His face seemed stuck in a frown.
“Um, well, could I have a medium.. strawberry froyo?” He asked. I smiled and giggled.
“What?” He turned towards me.
“Oh, its nothing, just strawberry is my favorite.” I answered.
“Well in that case make that two.” He said to the clerk. The clerk rolled his eyes.
“That will be ten fifty.” He droned. Chase pulled out his wallet and handed the man a few bills. We got our yogurt and sat down.
“So where are you from?” I asked.
“California, in San Diego.”
“Cool I born here lived here all my life.”
“That sounds nice, I have never lived anywhere more than two years.”
“Why?”
“Um, well my dad is military.”
“Really what branch?”
“He’s a, um he’s um Navy.”
“Hmm that’s weird I didn’t think there was a Navy base here.”
“I mean he is in the Army.”
“Oh thats cool, my dad was in the army.” I looked down and scooped up
some yogurt, and stuffed it in my mouth. I held myself back from tearing up.
“Is he retired now?”
“Um, no, well he was KIA.”
“KIA?”
“Killed in action.” I whispered. Chase looked down. Now it was his turn to shove some yogurt in his mouth. We both sat there silent for a while. I could feel a tear forming in my eye.
“I’m really sorry.”
“It was a while ago.” I said. For a while it was really quiet and awkward, but eventually he broke the silence.
“Wanna play the question game?” He asked. His yogurt was just about gone by now.
“What’s that?”
“Its where we ask each other questions, you know to get to know each other.”
“That sounds fun sure.”
“I’ll start. Whats your favorite color?” He asked. We continued to play the question game for about twenty more minutes. By the end I knew every superficial thing there was to know about Chase. After that we walked around and talked more, until most of the day had wasted away. I pulled out my phone and checked the time, it was eight o’clock. I looked over at Chase.
“Hey, I gotta go, my mom is going to be wondering where I am, I’m surprised that she hasn't texted me yet.” I said. He looked over at me with sad puppy dog eyes.
“Well I guess if you have to, first let me see your phone.” He said. I pulled out my phone again and handed it to him. He typed something in. When he gave it back his name and number were entered into my phone. He pulled his phone out and handed it to me, I did the same and entered my number. I gave it back to him.
“Well, bye.” I said smiling and walking away. He waved to me and smiled. I walked out to my car feeling very content. When I got home it was almost nine o’clock. I opened the front door. My mom was standing inside tapping her foot on the floor.
“And where have you been?” She asked. She gave me a look that burned through my soul. I looked down.
“I told you I was going out.” I muttered.
“Five hours ago, and I haven't heard a word from you since.”
“I’m sorry mom, I was at the mall, I just needed to get out of the house.”
“Okay, well next time I expect you to at least text me, okay?”
“Yes ma’m, I promise.” I walked up the stairs to re-tackle my physics homework. The weekend dragged by as I waited for Chase to text me, as my friend had told me again and again, never text the guy first. Finally my phone beeped at five o’clock Sunday night. I picked it up and looked at the message.
Chase Williams
Hey! :)
I smiled and opened the text.
Hey what’s up
I texted. I went back to reading my book. It was an romance between a prince and a peasant girl. I was always a sucker for romance.
ELijah looked down at Alexandra her blonde hair fluttering through the wind. Her piercing blue eyes looked right through his soul. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever met. Even though it had only been a day, he was sure he had known her forever. He took her hand into his and gingerly kissed it.
“M’Lady. It would do me great honor if you would attend the Gentlemen's Club Ball with me.” He asked her. Elizabeth glanced up into his dancing eyes. Her eyelashes fluttered.
“Why ELijah, the honor would be all my to attend with you.” She spoke, her sweet seductive voice flowing through the air like honey.
