Mother nature had branded them the pick pocketers of sea's men. Lana had never realised until now that it was intended as a curse, but now, she fully knew that the pierce of her heart was pain, and the thump in her head was of stress- so the murder of men could no longer be seen as a gift, not for her.
She remembered the day of the curse well. It had been the first of January. It was hot, the beating sun winked down at the world's mer people. The new year had resulted in the birth of mankind, bringing new threats and a lagoon of choice.
Lana had been swimming. She took even strokes, ploughing her arms through the water, slowly and with ease- her tail wriggling behind her like one of the accompanying fish. She was headed toward her favourite rock, she'd gotten so close she'd risen from the debts of her glistening sea and began swimming on the surface of the water.
Once she got close enough, her hands clasped down on the rock, but their grip began to loosen. She found herself holding on to the cold stone by merely the curve of her nail, and tried to scratch hold. Still they slipped and scrapped down, her body sinking back in to the waves, going down as thread dances away from it's ball of unwinding cotton. With a sigh she collapsed on to her back, floating at first, then arching with a stretch, frowning with disappointment.
She stared at her tail, the pearls of water coating them sparkling in the tremendous light, and the ebony of green that was her tail, looked florescent against the baby shade of the sea. That's when she saw it. Staring past her pear of a tail she saw something odd, something she didn't recognise laying upon the sea bed. Curiosity led her to dive down, motor towards the sea bed; flicking her tail with speed as a dog wags his.
