get the message. It might be a little voice, but please, listen.”
James nodded then slowly drifted back to sleep. The queen smiled.
Meanwhile, again, at Uncle Darius’s palace...
Katalia was not happy. Staying in a dungeon, with a ball gown on, stuck to the wall with magic, and being forced to marry her cousin, did not make Katalia’s day. Of course, she wasn’t married to her cousin, but she was going to be. Her father had to pick the people! She was given food, but it was mushy, and slimy, from what she could tell. It was dropped in at the door, and she couldn’t move over to get it. She was hungry, and scared, and messages that she had tried to send to her friends, had just stayed in her head, until she could practically hear them rattling around in there.
“I think I’m going crazy.” she admitted to Nathentex.
“Yeah, that happened to me a long time ago.” he answered.
“Why are you in here anyway?” she asked.
“Darius wanted Jolent to work for him, so he captured me, and if Jolent didn’t do what Darius wanted him to do, he would hurt me in some way, until Jolent finally did what was bidden of him.” answered the elf.
“That’s awful!” exclaimed Katalia, “And your parents never tried to rescue you?”
“If they tried, I don’t know about it.” said Nathentex.
“I’m sure that they did.” said Katalia.
“Thanks.” said Nathentex.
The two sat in silence for a long time, until the guards came down the steps again. Darius was with them. He glanced into the cell, and remarked, “Goodness, Katalia, you didn’t eat your dinner!”
“You think I could eat that food? And how, pray tell, would I be able to eat the food, if it is over there near the door, while I am stuck to the wall over here?” asked Katalia.
“Good question. Maybe you could do it with your powers.” said Darius.
“If you are trying to get me to tell you what my power is, it’s not working.” said Katalia.
Darius stepped forward, and raised his hand into the air. When he did, Katalia was forced to a standing position. She was shorter than her uncle by at least two heads. He reached toward her face, and waved his hand, making her mouth stay shut, so this time, she couldn’t bite him.
He touched her forehead, and she immediately blacked out.
When she woke up again, Katalia was lying on a bed. It was black, and it was huge. She sat up, and noticed that she was in a room that was the same size as her room at her home, and everything that was in her room was there. The only differences were that she had no clothes in the closet, and everything was black. On the edge of the bed was an outfit. It was a short sleeved blouse with a long skirt. It was simple, and also black. She walked to the mirror, and looked in it. Her hair was messed up, and her face and hands were incredibly dirty. There was a thin line across her neck, where Uncle Darius had put the knife. Katalia jumped as the door opened, and Darius stepped in.
“Hello, my dear,” he said, “I thought that you might like it in a better room. There is a washroom in the bathroom. Please change into the clothes that the servants have prepared for you on the bed.”
“I don’t want to.” said Katalia.
“You will.” said Darius.
“Why should I?”
Darius lifted his hand, and Katalia couldn’t breathe. He was choking her.
“Nod, if you will do what I want you to do. I want you to get changed into those clothes.”
Katalia nodded, and Darius let go. She sat down on a chair, and breathed hard. As she regained her bearings, he walked around, and talked to her.
“While you were unconscious, I went into your mind, and saw your power. The ability to read someones mind, and send them messages, is a great ability indeed. And your friends. Touching. But they are pathetic, even if you sent them a message. I saw the messages that you tried to send them. I saw everything Katalia. Everything. Your little escapades in the dungeons, from the time that the magician entered your mind, to just today, when I came into the dungeons. It is quite too bad that you don’t want to marry my son. He is so much more impressive than that little boy Prince Collin, or your pathetic excuse for a brother, who can’t even produce a good spell without knocking himself out.”
“Don’t you talk that way about my friends. They are-” Katalia started, but Darius waved his hand again, blocking out her voice.
“You annoy me, princess. If you annoy me one more time, I will block your mouth with magic, so that you may never speak again.”
Katalia glared at him, but she could feel her confidence slipping away. Darius chuckled evilly, and waved his hand again. A door on one side of the room opened, and Darius left, locking the door behind him.
Katalia sighed, and thought about her brother. She wondered if he was okay. She gathered the black dress in her arms, and walked into the adjoining room. In that room, there was a wash basin, which she used to give herself a wash. She put on the dress, and saw, to her surprise, that it fit perfectly. She had no shoes to wear, however, because as soon as she took off her ball gown, and shoes, to get into the other dress, they disappeared. Her flower fell out of her hair, and that disappeared too. Her hair was now hanging in her face, but she found a black ribbon on her bed that worked as a headband. After she was finished getting ready, the door opened, and Drake stepped in. He walked over to her, and Katalia noticed that he was as tall, maybe even taller, than his father.
“Father wants you to come down for dinner. You are to come whether you want to, or not.”
“Oh?” said Katalia. She was about to refuse, but remembered what Darius had said to her. She quickly continued what she had left off.
“Very well. Where is the dining room?”
“I’ll take you there.” said Drake, holding out his arm.
Katalia shuddered, but she took it, and allowed herself to be led to the dining room. Everything was either black, or red, and the place was eerie. When they finally reached the dining room, Darius had arrived, and was sitting at the head of the sixteen foot long table. Katalia walked with Drake, all the way to the end of the table, where Darius was sitting. As soon as she sat down, and Drake had sat down across from her, Darius touched the arm of her chair, and she was immediately bound to it by magic. Fortunately, she could still move her arms, so she could eat.
After she ate, she was feeling tired, so Darius told her that she could go to bed, after she changed into her nightgown. Katalia wasn’t sure why Darius was so concerned with what she wore, but she was careful of what she ate. However, Drake was eating the same things that she was, so she decided that it probably didn’t have anything wrong with it.
She was accompanied back to her room, and changed from her black clothes, to the pair that was on her bed. Once again, as soon as she changed into the other ones, they disappeared.
She crawled into the bed, and almost immediately fell asleep.

“Methuen where are you taking us?” Simolia asked in exasperation, “And when are you going to un- shrink Megdelia?”
“We is going’ to the elves! Yay! I like elves. But no. I will not de-shrink your friend there, cuz if you do, you would fly away from me.” answered Methuen, with a pouty lip.
“No we won’t.” said Aralina.
Simolia nudged her hard in the ribs, as if to say, ‘don’t say that. I would fly away as soon as I would get the chance.’
“Yes, you would. Because I am weird. Everyone thinks so. The only one who doesn’t think that I am weird is Kat. She is nice. I like her. If I see dragon- breath, I am going to rip his royal red hair from his head. Because she is nice, that’s why.”
“Have you seen, um, Darius?” asked Kaliea, not wanting to use the name that Methuen did.
“No, yes. You mind, different he watch. Parsnips, and killed.” said Methuen.
“Well that clears things up pretty well.” said Simolia, sarcastically.
Methuen stopped and stared at a patch of bushes, and apparently didn’t hear what Simolia had said. Collin, who was in the back, said,
“Why aren’t we still moving? It’s kind of dark in here, and why are there bushes and trees in a secret passageway?”
“Hmm,” Methuen said, then, “Guards!” he yelled in delight.
“Where!?” cried the rest.
There was a flash of light blue light, and soon following, a little shriek. Methuen lit up a ball of magic, and the fairies could see a little figure running away.
“Um, I don’t think that that is a guard.” said Kaliea, but she was too late. Methuen was already racing after the little person, as fast as he could. The others sighed, and flew after him, trying to catch up to him, before he did anything rash.

James woke up again. And this time, his mother was not in the room, but his father and a group of guards were. His father was telling them to do something. James left his eyes closed, just in case they looked over, and saw him awake. He could barely hear his father.
“Hurry...after them...children...adolescents...have to get them...get themselves in trouble.” he was saying. James heard the guards rush out of the room. His father came up to his bed, and put his hand on his son’s head. Then he quickly left.
James opened his eyes. There was no one in the room other than him. He thought about what his father was saying to the guards. Then it clicked. King Minas was sending out guards to pursue the rest of the group!
James was afraid that they would get caught. He needed to send them a message, somehow, to tell them that they were being hunted down. He dug his hands into the secret pockets of the tunic that he was wearing, and found something that looked a little bit like an ear with a mouth attached to the bottom. He put it up to his ear, and heard a voice saying,
“No, yes. You mind, different he watch.
