She stared out across the vast ocean, the water sheeted in a grey mist. Absentmindedly she wondered where the mist came from, but she was mainly focused on his words. They had been spoken so softly she almost hadn't heard them, but she did, and she didn't know how to reply.
She turned back to him and stared into his ice blue eyes, so full of emotions she couldn't tell what he was feeling.
At last words found their way out of her mouth. "What do you mean you're not coming back?"
The silvery lace of light the full moon gave was just enough to illuminate his soft features; his almond shaped eyes, his small nose, his thin lips...he was cute in the "boy next door" way.
He stared at her as well, drinking in her absolute beauty; she never wore make-up or fancy clothes, she was naturally gorgeous. She was almost as tall as him, her long legs were lightly tanned and her long, silky black hair fell in light curls down to her waist. Her large, intelligent grey eyes had a ring of yellow around the irises, and they were sheltered by thick eyelashes and arched eyebrows. Her nose was small and her lips were full and red.
"You know I can't stay here, no matter how much I want to or you want me to. I have to go."
She felt pressure behind her eyes, but she didn't want to cry. Not here, not in front of him.
Fighting back the tears she said, "We could try to make it work. It might not-"
"Shh," he whispered, holding his hand up. He smiled, pearls glistening in the moonlight. "You know I can't stay, I don't belong here anymore." His face turned grim with sad, pleading eyes. "You have to understand this: I don't want to leave you, that's why I'm still here. But I have to move on. Please, try to understand this."
She gave in to the tears, silver diamonds falling silently down her face. He wanted to wipe them away, but he knew he couldn't.
"Will I ever see you again?"
The question hung in the air, written in silver light on her face. The ocean waves crashed against each other, rocking the old wooden dock they were standing on. He turned to the waves, envying them. Whether he answered "yes" or "no", the waves would stay the same; nothing could change them...nothing could kill them. The ocean is forever, like love, but unlike life, happiness, anger, joy, and pain...The waves will always thrash about, but life will end.
He turned back to her and stared into her grey eyes shimmering with tears of sorrow and fear.
Fear of losing him.
"Don't cry, love, it's not forever. We will see eachother again. I promise."
He leaned forward to kiss her, but his lips passed through hers, cold and misty. He couldn't feel the warmth of her skin, the tears running down rivers on her face, or the softness of her lips; she couldn't feel his skin. All they felt was cold and their pure love for eachother.
"I love you," she whispered.
"I love you forever," he whispered back, his voice cracking. "Promise me something. Promise me you won't hold back, that you'll love and care for others, that you won't shut yourself out waiting for me."
She didn't hesitate. "I promise."
"I have to go now. Good-bye, my love."
"Bye."
She watched him fade away into the moonlight; a mist over the ocean waves. She stayed there all night, staring at the spot where he once stood.
If she listened closely, she could hear his voice in the waves saying, "I love you..."
She replied, "Forever, my love."
