chapter one -

I pushed my chair into the table and gathered both mine and Harrison's plate " i hope you liked it . chocolate fudge cake is my specialty . "
I cursed the minute i said that . He was probably laughing in his head thinking that it should be my specialty seeing as how i'm so damn big .
He smiled and shook his chocolate brown bald head " Angie , i did actually . It was good . Hopefully i can get a piece to go ? "
" oh sure . ill be right back . "
I rushed to the kitchen to put the dishes in the sink and to get Harrison another piece of cake .
I had worked so hard to make him dinner that i damn near forgot everything else i had to do . But i'd went out of my way to make sure the food was good .
Baked chicken breast , mashed potatoes , macaroni & cheese , and corn bread .
I hardly ever made a home cooked mean like that and adding dessert was really pushing it but i wanted to make a good impression on Harrison . My best friend , Makayla , set us up . She thinks i need a man and maybe she's right . I cant recall the last time i had someone to love .
Laughing out loud while i cut the cake i thought " he probably thinks your a fat ass , i wouldn't be surprised " .
That was my problem . That right there ! I couldn't find one nice thing to say about myself if my life depended on it . True i had flawless skin and a good grade of hair that most black girls in my family didn't have but , i'm a size 20 while all the other girls are as thin as my pinky finger . It hurts .
As i wrapped the cake in aluminum foil i had a mind to cut me another piece but i thought against it . It wouldn't do me any good .
" Here you go ," i handed Harrison the cake and sat back at the table across from him " i hope you had a nice dinner and everything . "
" I did , i really did . You're a wonderful host . "
He smiled !
His smile melted me right away . it melted my heart , my soul , it melted the spot between my legs too .
2 hours later i was showing Harrison out .
No , we hadn't done anything !
We watched a movie and even had a short conversation about our selves . I was really feeling him . That is until he dropped the 'friend' word .
Halfway into the movie he turned to me and said ' I had a good time with you . You're a wonderful woman , beautiful too . maybe we can do this again sometime - "
I cut him off " i'd like that . "
" - as friends . "
When he said that i swear every bone in my body went stiff . I mean , could you believe this brotha ! I cooked for him and everything and he dropped the friend card .
The rest of the night was awkward . He could tell i was different . I wasn't trying to be but hell , why waste all my smiles and hard work on a brotha whose not feeling me ? !
I'm 32 , i ain't got but so long left to fall in love . And then there's even more of a rush to get married and have children .
uh-un , not wasting my time . But i had to admit , he was fine !
Thru the rest of the evening all the way up until i showed him to the door i kept thinking about how i was gonna let Malayla's ass have it !
I opened the front door for Harrison " you have a nice night . "
" you too . i'll call you . "
I mumbled under my breath " but i wont answer . oh , and have a nice life too "
He was easily added to my short list of ex's & never would be's .

chapter two -

The next day i dialed Makayla's number but it went straight to voicemail .
A hour later i tried again and the same thing .
I put the phone back on the hook , grabbed a ice cream sandwich from the freezer and headed to my room . There was no point in me getting mad over the situation . I mean , i did agree to go out with Harrison , she didn't force me . So it had to be partly my fault .
I stretched out in bed and took a bite of the ice cream sandwich and asked myself " is this life ? "
I decided right then that if this was life i would die old and alone .
But until ii die , ill be waiting for the right one .
