I laid there in my bed with my I-pod blaring “Body Crumbles” in my ears, tracing abstract patterns on the textured popcorn ceiling. It was nearly 4:30 on a Friday morning and anyone with a brain and who had woken up at 6:45 the previous morning would be asleep right now. Trouble was, though I tossed and turned all night, I never even came close to sleep. I sighed, rolled my eyes, and finally just gave up. “Insomnia is a cruel bitch” I mumbled to myself in what I’m pretty sure if anyone else had heard would have thought was Chinese. Funny thing was, my Chinese vocabulary consisted of hello and goodbye. I was a smart kid don’t get me wrong, but Chinese is a world all its own and I had no desire to become a part of. I tossed the black satin sheet off of me and slowly walked to my mirror; I gasped and backed away when I saw my reflection. I looked like I could be a zombie from the movie ghost of mars. Yikes, I thought to myself. I crawled back even more slowly and hastily grabbed my silver and purple brush. I needed to tame that horrid beast atop my head that dared to call itself hair. I brushed from the bottom up undoing all the tangles in my path. Once I had gotten finished my hair was as smooth as silk and I smiled to myself, pleased with the outcome. My I-pod changed to “Your Guardian Angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and my smile grew even broader. I was in love with this song and always had been. I sang along with the words as I examined my eyes. There were deep purple bruise like bags under my hazel eyes and again I cursed my insomnia. Everyone always thought I wore contacts at school. They were always shocked to find out that I had never worn them a day in my life. “Your eyes are beautiful.” They would always tell me. That was usually the only complement I ever got. Apparently everyone thought I was emo or something. Yet after thousands upon thousands of times I had said, “Alondra is just Alondra. No stereotype involved.” You would think they had gotten the point. Nope on this island if you were white, you were either a slut or emo and that was the end of it. Galveston ultimately sucked.
I whimpered to myself and glanced at the clock. It read 4:47 in big bold neon green letters. Another day without a lick of sleep. I thought the doctor said the damned depression pills were supposed to make you sleepy. Well, either he lied or they don’t work. I groaned and put away my I-pod. I walked sluggishly to the shower and turned the hot water knob on as high as it would go. After about a minute and a half I saw the steam twisting and turning in the air. Perfect, I thought to myself. If I couldn’t sleep I ought to just go ahead and get ready for school. I stripped off my clothes and climbed into the steaming shower. At first the hot water sent a chill down my spine but then I relaxed into it. I felt all my muscles begin to uncoil and become more relaxed with each passing moment. I began to sing “Remembering Sunday” by All Time Low as I washed my hair and body. After about 5 to 10 extra minutes of relaxation in the scalding water, I turned it off and pulled back the zebra print shower curtains. One of the many perks of being 16 in this house is I get my own bathroom! This means I get to decorate as I please. I grabbed one of my fluffy white towels and wrapped it around my body in sort of a dress fashion then took another of my fluffy towels and towel dried my hair. “Evil Angel” by Breaking Benjamin started playing loudly from my phone, almost causing me to jump up and out of my skin. I looked at the caller I.D. and it read Jaylin. A smile spread across my face and jumped up and down cheerfully as I answered it.
“Hewo?” I said in a kiddy voice. I heard him chuckle the he replied darkly, “Little girl, little girl, let me in!” I stifled a giggle and replied in a kiddy voice yet again, “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!” he laughed and through it all he said, “You, have hair, on, your chin?” I gasped in mock horror and clutched my hand to my chest as if he had wounded me. “As if!” I yelled back laughing. “Why do you need me to let you in anyway? Where is the key I gave you?” there was a long pause on the phone that told me he lost it. “Uh… I didn’t lose it if that’s what you’re implying.” He said sheepishly. I rolled my eyes and came back with, “Yeah, right. I’ll be down in a minute Jay-bear.” I hung up the phone and ran into my room. I pulled open my drawer and pulled out my light blue bra and bottoms and slid them on then skipped over to my closet and pulled on a pair of white skinny jeans. I grabbed my R.J.A shirt and made a mad dash for the front door. I swung it open and Jaylin was still standing there like he had implied he was only his eyes had widened the moment he looked at me. I looked at him funny and cocked my head to the side. I looked down to see what had made his eyes go so damn wide and I instantly saw it. I forgot to put on my shirt! I still had it in my hand. I covered my chest with the shirt and felt my cheeks blush a bright scarlet. “Um… you can come in. If you want to that is.” I said as I ducked behind the door and slid on my shirt. “Sure.” He said and stepped in the door and closed it just as I had finished pulling on my shirt.
He stood by the entrance and, though he was my best friend since like forever, I had to say that he looked hot! His hair was redid black and swung off to the side perfectly, the black avenged sevenfold shirt he wore clung tightly to him, his skinny jeans he wore in that these-are-my-favorite-jeans-because-they-look-amazing-on-me way and his favorite green cap was on his head. His green eyes were dancing in the dim light of the candles I had lit. “What are you doing up so early hun? I thought I was the only one with insomnia outta the group.” I asked, curiosity filling my voice. “Well that may be true but I just wanted to get on at your stop. My dad is coming home in like 10 minutes and you know my mom and him always fight. I just really don’t wanna hear it.” He said staring down at his fingers. I smiled a crooked half smile and intertwined my fingers in his. He looked up at me with a bewildered expression that I just shrugged off. “Why of course you may Sir Jaylin.” He laughed softly and I led him up to my room.
He plopped on my bed and made himself right at home. I shook my head and blow dried my hair. It was kind of short but longer than a bob so it really didn’t take too long. I clicked it off and due to the fact that I wasn’t looking in the mirror and I had the blow dryer going, I didn’t hear either of the twins come in. The twins were Skylar and Kyle. If their hair weren’t different lengths and Kyle didn’t have a snake bite, you couldn’t tell them apart unless you had known then for a while. The four of us had been inseparable best friends for about three years now. And only recently did Skylar and I start dating. Suddenly I felt a pair of strong arms wrap gently around my waist. I jumped slightly but then I heard Skylar’s deep seductive voice and I practically melted into his arms right there on the spot. “Why so jumpy babe?” he asked. His warm breath tickled my ear and I got the faint smell of peppermint that lingered in his breath. “I wasn’t expecting everyone to pull a me.” I said sheepishly. He laughed softly and buried his face in the crook of my neck and shoulder. “You always smell like sugar cookies.” He enquired. “What, do you have a secret stash of them that you munch on when we leave or something?” I laughed at that. “Oh yes, they are stashed at the end of my imaginary rainbow brick road and are guarded by Jim the rainbow.” I told him in a playfully sarcastic voice. I felt him smile and he kissed my neck gently as if that were some silent cue Jaylin and Kyle both rolled their eyes and left. I turned my head slightly trying to see why they left me when Skylar lifted me up and laid me on my bed tickling me. I was laughing so much I ended up crying. “Sk-Sky-Skylar!” I panted out between laughs. He slowly stopped and hovered his body over me. “What?” he asked with a bemused smile on his face. “It’s a little too early to be trying to make me laugh myself to death, don’t you think hun?” I asked playfully. I propped myself up on my elbows and kissed him lightly on the lips.
His bemused smile became a sweet one and he lowered himself onto the bed beside me. He gently moved the hair from my eyes and cradled me to his chest. I loved being like this with him. It was the one place I could be where all the noise and chaos of the world ceased to exist. In my mind we were the only two souls on the planet. And that was just how I liked it too. “Amor?” He asked in his deep voice that always made my heart flutter. Though the boy had no touch of Mexican in him, he always managed to speak perfect Spanish and make me melt. “Yes?” I responded in a small voice. He chuckled once and I felt it in his chest. I counted his heart beats. 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on until I felt gentle fingers lifting my chin so my gaze could be solely on his eyes. “I love you.” He told me. There was no humor in his voice, only seriousness that told me he wasn’t lying. I swear my breathing stopped and my heart skipped about 2 to 3 beats. It wasn’t in a bad way, not at all. I stared into his blue eyes and said the truest words I had ever spoken to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. “I love you too. Always have, always will.” The grin that covered his face was one of pride and joy. He kissed me then. Soft at first, but then the intensity took over both of us. I softly bit his lower lip and his response was instant. He deepened the kiss with a force that was pure desire. I let him explore the inside of my mouth as he pleased and he let me do the same with him. His strong hands gripped my hips and pulled me closer to him, molding me to the shape of his body.
The door opened and both of us stopped abruptly and looked hastily at the door. Jaylin
