This book is a collection of unusual facts and phenomena consisting of a graphic and a short description. It is not intended to be exact information on the subjects. It is material that I have discovered over the years that I found of interest. It is felt thatshowing an illustration of the subject, as well as giving written information about it will enhance the material .It is hoped that you will find it interesting and thought provoking. Included is a Bibliography of some of the main sources I used. Each consists of an illustration followed by a short paragraph explaining it. This is in the same manner as a well known newspaper supplement. It is not intended be an exhaustive explanation of the subject nor do I pretend to be an expert on any of the subjects. The Graphics are all original and are my own. I have used other material for artistic reference only. The intent of the book is to provide these illustrations instead of photographs to better show the concepts involved. The reader should see this book as a starting point for further research on the subjects. It contains 40 different color illustrations.
AtlantisThe Atlantis legend goes back to Plato in one of his dialogs: Timaeus, in which he relates what was told to his ancestor Solon, by Egyptian priests. Essentially it described a civilization “beyond the Pillars of Hercules” that lay in the Atlantic ocean. This civilization had conquered much of the Mediterranean and beyond, but was inundated by ocean waves that completely submerged it. The above illustration shows it as described by Plato as consisting of a series of rings with a central island. Some have hypothesized that this referred to memories of the volcanic eruption of ancient Thera, as well as other locations in Spain and the Azores among others.
The Missing AvengersOn December 5, 1945, five Navy Avenger torpedo bombers took off from Ft. Lauderdale on a routine training mission. Within a few hours they reported that they were lost. A Navy Martin Mariner took off in search of them to guide them home. All six aircraft were lost without trace. A transmission from one of the planes said: “...white water...everything is strange–even the ocean...” Yet all the aircraft had survival gear and life rafts and there were many islands in the area where they could have crash-landed. Furthermore the flight leader was an experienced navigator.
The AnnunkiThe Babylonian Battery
In 1936, near Bagdad, a small vase was found, about 2000 years old, that contained a hollow copper tube in the middle of which was suspended an iron tube closed at the top by an asphalt plug. In 1940, William F. Grey, a Westinghouse engineer, used a similar device filled with a copper sulfate solution to electroplate a small silver statue with gold. Could the ancients have used such methods? The first modern battery was made by Alessandro Volta in 1799.
The Giant Stones of Baalbek
This ancient Lebanese city, was called Heliopolis by the Romans. In the first century AD they built a temple to Jupiter using some stones in the foundation that are as tall as a five story building and weigh 600 tons or more. The quarry was a mile away from the temple. It is a mystery how they were moved. Even modern equipment would be challenged today to move objects of such size and weight.
Ancient Brahmin texts estimate the life span of our universe to be 4.32 Billion years; this is extremely close to modern estimates of 4.6 Billion years. How could the ancient Brahmins have estimated this so closely?
In 1982 Robert Marks, an underwater geologist, found hundreds of amphorae pieces in Guanabara Bay near Rio de Janeiro. He also located the remains of a nearby wooden wreck. The amphorae is dated to the 3rd century AD from North Africa. Though disputed, it is entirely possible for even small vessels to cross the Atlantic. During WW2, a lifeboat from the torpedoed freighter Anglo Saxon crossed the Atlantic from the Azores to the Bahamas following relatively closely the route taken by Columbus. This strengthens the case for ancient seafarers crossing the Atlantic to the Americas.
SurvivorThe Coelacanth shown above is a living survivor from the distant past. It was thought extinct until one was caught off the coast of Mozambique in 1938. The above example was seven feet long. Another example are sharks, which go back to shortly after the Jurassic period. Could the Loch Ness Monster, which some think could be a surviving ancient Plesiosaur, be another?
When the earth formed it was a huge ,condensed mass of white hot material. There is no way that anything organic could have developed under the intense heat and pressure. So how would we get the amino acids and other ingredients that would be needed to form the “organic soup” necessary to develop life?
One possible way would be a collision with a
