Dust and Rainbows
Secret Garden St Miator
Time seemed to stand still inside the Secret Garden, the light always seemed to pour in through the stained glass windows painting everything in shades of red, yellow and blue no matter the time of day. Riko was starting to wonder if it ever rained on Astraea Hill.
She peeked out through a blue section of the glass, looking at the trees outside, their tips waving in the breeze. It seemed like a nice day, and she made up her mind to go for a walk later. First though, she was searching for something. Not pages of a mysterious journal, not school books, and not information on Etoiles or even the mysterious Assistant head chancellor of Miator. She was searching for fun this time, a good book, maybe a new friend? Curiously, she noticed something new.
Wandering the endless halls of books until she reached the librarian's desk she stopped to examine a huge fish tank. It must have been new, the whole thing gave every indication that it had just arrived, a few students were still milling about cleaning up the packaging and fish bags.
She approached the glass, touching it lightly, several pretty fish, perhaps saltwater breeds swam within. Pretty pink and orange false coral decorated the interior blue.
"Hello," she greeted, looking at the creatures, "Welcome to Astraea Hill, I hope you like it here. The Secret Garden is a very special place."
She wasn't embarrassed, talking to fish like that, nor did she realize someone was watching her nearby.
Aki had been following Rin into the Secret Garden because Rin appeared to be intriguing to Aki. She didn't make herself noticed because she didn't want attention drawn to herself. She had grown rather found of Rin by watching her. She had first seen Rin a while back when she had first come here she saw Rin at church, and had been fascinated ever since.
Aki silently stepped out of where she had been watching Rin. Aki had walked towards her, and time seemed to slow down as she fell into thought. Even if Aki was a first year, Rin seemed nice enough to accept Aki no matter her age difference. Aki didnt even know how old Rin was, and didn’t really care about that. But she did know that Rin was friendly.
“Rin?” Aki said. “Former Etoile-sama?” Aki hen smiled, “I understand about talking to the fish. It isnt abnormal.” And Aki stood there, awaiting a reaction.
Hearing her name Riko became startled and spun quickly to face the gentle voice behind her. Etoile-sama? Who? Her? She waved her hands and blused wildly.
"No, no, no, I'm not an etoile. I'd never, I mean I could never! I mean, sorry," she bowed, pink-hair flying as she moved quickly. "You must have me confused with my cousin. Minigawa, Rin Sensei, the assistant chancellor of St. Miator. I'm just Rin...er..you can call me Riko. I'm not an etoile." She straightened, still blushing at the thought of being mistaken for her much older cousin. Rin didn't know much about her, only that she was expected to be like her and she never would be. Not in a thousand years.
She relaxed as she focused back in the fish. Not abnormal? She reached to rub the back of her neck, laughing a little. "Well they deserve to be greeted like anyone else right? Ano.." She worried she was being rude, "You're Reiko, Aki right? We're in the same class aren't we?"
Aki smiled at this girl's nervousness."Yes, I'm Aki. That's what you can call me." and Aki slightly bowed. “I am very happy to meet you. Sorry if you have felt hurt by me misadressing you. I tried to do my research.” Then Aki Exteneded her hand out. “ Let me re-introduce myself. im Aki Reiko. Im a first year at St Miator’s school for girls. You can call me Aki.” And she thought of how nervous Rin was again.
Rin seemed very cute. She wondered why Rin seemed so nervous. “ Well, there is certainly no need for you to be so nervous about me by the way.” and Aki smiled,” I really dont mind what someone I want as a friend has to say.” And Aki chuckled.
The pinkette stared at Aki's hand a moment. A handshake? Is that what she expected? The western greeting confused Rin. So she took Aki's hand and courtseied instead. "Nice to meet you." She let her hand go and relaxed a little.
"Gomen," she said, giving the informal word for "sorry". "I'm only nervous because you confused me with Minigawa-sensei. She and I are so...different." She turned
