"ELA! YOU'RE GOING TO BE LATE, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE LATE ON THE FIRST DAY OF BEING A BIG GIRL AT YOUR SCHOOL! HURRY UP, I'LL BE WAITING IN THE CAR!!", I heard my mother yell up, from the bottom of the stairs. I run down just as my mom slams the front door closed, sighing I grab my bag and books. Looking around I realize I've lost my left shoe. Helpful. Running around the house I can hear my mom getting impatient, she honks the car's horn, indicating she isn't going to wait much longer. Last year she took Katy to school and I had to walk, I was late by about an hour that day... Finally I find my shoe hiding in the cat's basket, I slip it on and run out. I practically jump into the car and only just manage to buckle the seat-belt when my mom speeds off onto the main road to get us to school.
I smile as I see Ross near the school entrance. The second my mom stops the car I fling the car door open and get out. I wave bye to her and kiss Katy's forehead, she's 13 but I treat her like she's 6 since she acts like it. I skip over to Ross and fling my arms around him, he wraps his arms around my waist. We stand like that for a few minute and then let go, I look up at him and smile. His beautiful blue eyes bore into my dark brown ones, I see so much in those eyes, so many memories and good times. He's always been there for me. The school bully, Peter, strolls past and deliberately knocks into me. I fall onto Ross and he laughs. I glare at Peter as me and Ross get back on our feet. Ross takes my hand in his and leads us both into the school building. We're not dating, many people think we are and many people think we should, but we're not. Just best friends.
His locker is right next to mine, we requested it that way. I look over at him from my locker and he looks too, smiling at me as he grabs his French dictionary from a shelf. This causes an avalanche of textbooks, folders, etc, to fall from his locker and onto the ground. He sighs and silently curses under his breath. I giggle and help him pick up his books. He smiles again, a smile that reaches his eyes, my favorite kind of smile. I smile back and place his books carefully back into his locker. As I do so a small scrunched up sheet of paper falls out a textbook. I go to pick it up but he grabs it before I can. He shoves it in his pocket and runs his hand through his hair nervously. I shrug it off, if he's keeping something from me it's his own business. He closes over his locker door and takes my hand,
"We goin' to class, Mak?" he asked me, I can tell he's trying to distract me from whatever the paper was but I nod anyway.
"Yeah, sure, let's go." I respond as he proceeds to drag me through the corridor to our first class which we have together.
This day seems to drag on... and on and on... absolutely nothing happening, at all. It's lunch, finally, I'm starved. I sit down next to Ross with the girls. Stacy grins at me and Ross,
"Come on, people!" she says, sounding somewhat annoyed, "When the heck are you going to become a couple? Everyone's waiting!" she explains to us, she keeps looking between the two of us. Expecting us to magically follow her will and kiss or something. Not going to happen. Ross shakes his head, trying not to laugh,
"Nah, Stacy. There's nothing here," he says the last part as if he's dissapointed, does he want something more? "Just friend, like always, right, Mak?" I nod in response to his question, still trying to figure out my own. Stacy lets out a high sigh,
"Sure, sure! Just friends. That's what they all say," she finishes, winking at me. I giggle and shake my head, like Ross did,
"Maybe because they're smart, Stacy?" I inquire, looking up at her from me pizza,
"Nope, they're all love-sick morons, honey!" she stated with a grin on her face. I laugh, knowing she's referring to me.
I glance around the room and catch the eye of some new girl. She's quite pretty but I can also see her eyeing up Ross. Good luck, new girl. Ross has plenty of girls all over him but they all mean nothing to him. I've never found out who he actually does like, someone he prefers over all the rest. There has to be one girl, everyone has that one person. In Ross' case, he's very fortunate. I wonder if she knows...
As if deliberately interupting my thoughts, the school bitches walk over to our table, they are both covered in so much fake tan they look like they'd bathed in it,
"Hey Makaela, Ross is single right? You're not pretty enough for him anyway!" the fakest of the two states simply, as though it's the answer to the question '1+1=?'. I feel myself being pushed from my seat, by the blonde girl's sidekick. It doesn't hurt, but as I try to get up from the floor I see the brunette picking up a slice of my pizza. She looks at her 'leader' and the blonde bitch nods. Next thing I know, before anyone else can react, I have a slice of pizza hurtling towards me. Instead of moving, that would be the logical thing, I scream as the tomato-ish sauce (it's a school dinner, it's not going to be organic, real, tomatoes) covers my top and shorts. Ross' eyes widen and he help me up, Emma hands me a wash cloth to wipe off the main damage, Stacy glares at the bitches and they hurry away from our table laughing. We all stand there untill Liz suggests I change clothes. I nod and start to make my way to my locker, I always have a spare set of clothes in there. Ross grabs my arm,
We'll get them back for this. You can count on that!" he assures me, I giggle and look at him,
"I know, I can always count on you, Ross. Thank you," I tell him this and he grins like a fool, he releases his grip on my arm letting me go to my locker.
The only spare clothes I have in my locker are more fancy that what I would wear normally in school but it's all I have. So I change into them in the school toilet's and walk back to our lunch table. Elizabeth hugs me and whispers in my ear,
"I'm not even joking here, but I seriously think you and Ross should date! I'll see what I can do," she winks and without another word she skips over to Ross and starts talking to him. I'm really curious about what they're talking about but before I can even think about getting closer, Stacy shouts from the other end of the table. I walk over and look at her questioningly,
"Which top?" she asks me, showing up a pink sparkly top and a pink glittery top. I point to the sparkly one, there's hardly a difference between them but she's stressing out about it. She nods and flings away the glittery one like it's an unwanted rag. I laugh and walk over to Ross and Liz. They've stopped talking by now though, I look at Liz and she winks again. I'm not sure what that means though... And I'm not so sure whether it's good or not...
"Ugh! I seriously want to kill those girls, who do they think they are? The President? You can't just fling pizza at a person and push her off a seat! It's not right, especially if you look like an orange barbie!" Stacy has been ranting about that incident for around 15 mintues now. We are all standing outside the school building like we always do, talking untill Stacy's mom comes and picks her up. Then we all walk home...
"Stacy, calm down. It's fine, they'll give up eventually." Ross states simply to Stacy, this doesn't calm her down at all though, she goes into 'thinking mood', she does this sometimes.
"Ahaa! I know, Ross date Ela. They'll have to leave you alone, right?!" she asks, excitedly, as if she's just figured out
